Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter Jacket

I am looking at a winter cycling jacket for temps in the 15-25 degree F range. Trying to find something that is not bulky, warm and wind proof, under 150 dollars . Any suggestions?

You're not going to find many jackets that will keep you warm in the teens, isn't bulk, and (this is the big one) is under $150.

I would suggest buying a lesser jacket, and layering up.

Look at non-cycling hiking/backpacking lightweight jackets from manufacturers like Patagonia, Marmot, Northface etc.

They sometimes double-up as nice cycling jackets.

But for less than 150$? that's the real problem IMHO...

The castelli bormio or ganna jackets on on sale for $80 on bonktown regularly. If you go to the bonktown forum and ask the admin to put it on for a day, you may not need to wait for long to get them to show up.

I have the ganna jacket & can wear it down to mid 20's with just a baselayer and jersey.

You can also find Campy Textran Thermo jackets for under $150.

I have an Endura jacket that has kept me comfortable down to 5F. You have to wear a wool sweater at those temperatures though. I like to be a little cold when starting out. Almost any shell will work

I go with layers. Today at 34F I wore three long sleeve winter weight jerseys and two lightweight jackets and was comfortable. I find that with heavier jackets that are more windproof, I'm warm at first but get cold toward the end of the ride from trapped sweat. Both of these jackets are very lightweight and can be folded up to fit easily in a jersey pocket. For colder temps I add a thin fleece top.

Anyone know anything about the Novaras Stratos jacket (REI for 149)?

not sure if it will go down to the teens, but my gore phantom is very warm once i get moving. Add to that the removable sleeves for those in between rides and it's a great jacket. I'm sure a warm base layer under it and you'd be good to go. It's got windstopper, which helps with the temps a lot.

I got mine from eastern mountain sports on sale and it was below $150.

I just got a Columbia Rain Jacket (which is really just a breathable shell) for $50-60 at The Sports Authority. So yes, it can be done.

I just got that one today, it is a little snug (XXL - I know I'm too fat for this sport, but I'm working on that....) so I don't know how that will work with layers.

I wear three layers for 30s and below. The first is a cold gear under armour base layer, then a long sleeve jersey, and finally a Capo thermal jacket. This combo works into the teens with no problem.

I have been very happy with my Gore Phantom jacket. It's more than you want to spend but I got mine on sale for $125 but that won't help you if you need it yesterday.

Anyway, I use it with a base layer, slightly warm long sleeve jersey and then the jacket and that gets me into the mid 20s comfortably but for me the jacket is just a tad tight with 3 layers - especially in the upper arm area. If I wanted to go colder I'd need a heavier base layer (the one I use is very minimal) and the combination might be too tight.

In any case, find a wind/waterproof jacket you like that fits well over layers but not too loose and you'll be good to go. It's mostly base layers that make the difference. I've gone snowshoeing in single digits with lots of wind with just 3 layers and the third is just a very light wind and waterproof jacket - granted with a warm base layer and a fleece jacket. I'll get cool if stopped too long.

My coldest ride so far has been 28º. I layered, all with pretty cheap stuff, Ended up too warm about mid-ride, and had to open the wind jacket a bit. I feel fairly sure that what I was wearing would have done fine down to 20º. It was, in order of next-to-skin first:

--a Rocky brand poly shirt (hunting section of Wal-Mart, $16)
--a long sleeve poly shirt from Wal-Mart (not as close-fitting as the above, was around $10 last year)
--a cheap thermal jacket from Nashbar (don't remember what it cost, but it wasn't much)
--a wind jacket from Nashbar (I think the "Essential" jacket, $30)

If I had chosen to wear a long sleeve jersey instead of the 2nd shirt above, it would be plenty warm down to 15º, if not even for colder temps.

If you have thermal layers already, then I suggest the Showers Pass Double Century ($125, less if you have an REI coupon). Very lightweight, but has protection where you need it.

I've got a light rain jacket that I use in the winter. It's wind/waterproof. Then I just layer up with a baselayer and a jersey (long or short) underneath.

I was thinking large- I wear a 40 coat, 16.5 neck, 40 inch chest. Should I go extra large?

The old runner I am uses my Gortex Jacket that is not cheap but years ago I paid $100 for it, with a layer of polypro under this work fine. You can get them in running stores they are the best. They will stop the wind and with layer you can handle most things.

I dunno, I've got a big belly and when zipped I have about an inch or two of space (while wearing a cotton t-shirt) if I was going to wear layers. YMMV...

Just got back from a night ride-30 miles. Temp 18 F, wore a light wool turtleneck, Ibex wool jersey, another wool wabi jersey and cannonade rain jacket for a wind breaker. Very warm but when I git in took off the rain jacket and found a layer of ice on the outer wabi wool jersey. All the moisture had wicked through the wool and was trapped under the rain jacket and froze. Pretty cool.

My $49 Garneau Jacket works well down to 20f with 2 layers underneath. Throw in a layer of newspaper just in case when it's really cold. What's all this about $150 for a jacket !?!? I'd rather have 3 of mine and rotate them as needed.
