Finding Motivation........

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finding Motivation........

I havent hopped on my bike in a little over 3 wks now, due to various injuries, lack of time, etc...(son was on christmas break so I had him, then screwed my back and neck up doing jiu jitsu)

SO...looks like I am finally "able" to get riding again...but I cant find the motivation to get up and ride again...almost like I've lost my "mojo".

Anyone have any ideas? How do you get going?

Bikes: '09 Felt F55, '84 Masi Cran Criterium, (2)'86 Schwinn Pelotons, '86 Look Equippe Hinault, '09 Globe Live 3 (dogtaxi), '94 Greg Lemond, '99 GT Pulse Kinesis

I've been in your situation a few times in the last two years. Generally, after I've ridden once it's like the dam has cracked and I can't stop it until I get injured again.

Just make yourself do it once and you'll probably be eye-deep in motivation again.

I go out and get on the bike, and the problem takes care of itself. Of course, wintertime temps here don't drop below the low 50s, at night. In Ohio State country(where I come from), it might be somewhat more difficult.

Looking at new bikes online that I want usually does it for me. Because im like "man I wish I could ride THAT!" which then leads to "Man i cant wait to get home and just ride"

and mad props for doing BJJ, I have always wanted to try it out but have never had the opportunity.

Drop at least $3k on a bike. You'll guilt yourself into riding it and tell yourself that you better be fast if you have such a nice bike.

Sign up for an event (race or charity ride) and then you'll be motivated to train for it.

Any-time that average seasonal weather and ice-free pavement exist, I get out there. I know that if I miss a day of good riding, it might be a while before conditions allow riding again. I live in Chicago and I'm at 122 miles, mtd.

Thanks! I used to take a reality based training called "Haganah" and at my studio they roll BJJ at the same time. My cousin takes and he was always trying to get me to roll with them. I finally sacked up and rolled and am hooked on it.

Thanks for the advice all... I'll have to do like I did the first time rolling BJJ and just sack up and go!!

Any time I break that pattern I run into the same problem. To get me warmed up and motivated I usually just do some basic yoga sun salutes. Gets me warmed up stretched and ready to go. You can look up some quickies on yogajournal.com.

Hate to say it, but buying stuff works. Stimulate the economy. I just picked up a new black 105 5600 crankset with BB and FD for less than $100, and not on eBay. Now I'm going to go ride all of the remaining miles out of my old crankset while the new stuff is en route.

You're assuming you need motivation to ride. Decide to ride without it and the motivation will return.

Here's a question: How long are you thinking about riding? If you're planning on doing - say - 50 miles, that might be the turn off. Try thinking about a short trip - ride to the LBS or REI or IGA or any other place with letters in it - just an out and back. That might be enough to break the dam...

After you get out of the shower stand naked in front of your bathroom mirror and jump up and down a few times. This sight is enough to motivate me to get on the trainer (I live in WI) for at least one hour/day, usually more. I don't want to start the season looking like the Pillsbury Doughboy in bibs OR dying doing my usual spring rides. It works for me.

last time i went to the bike shop to do that i came home with a new bike and have been throwing all my money at it at the moment trying to get it where i want it before race season. ill get back to the old Lemond after i buy new shifters for the new Fuji (use old Fuji shifters to fix Lemond)

i did make myself ride that night though. i hit the trainer at like 9:30pm and watched the new sufferfest video i got. today all the motivation i needed to ride was seening the sun melt all the snow off the roads and dry them up. it was still 34* and i just got a nasty cold but i got a short 20mi ride in anyways and finally got to test out the new PR3s.

You don't need to buy anything. Just head out for a short ride to get a cup of coffee. Once on the bike your mojo will start to return.
