Well, I had a $100 Bell Array that saved my life yesterday when my head and shoulder hit the pavement doing 51 mph. My noggin is a little sore at the point of impact but I am amazed at how well this helmet performed. I'll be buying another one just like it tomorrow once I feel like getting out.
Just spent nearly $200 on a new Specialized S-Works. It was the one that fit my head the best, covered the areas that it needed to cover, was reasonably comfortable and wasn't as mushroom-like as the Giro or Bell helmets of similar size. My previous helmet was a Bell Sweep-R, great helmet, unfortunately I was a dumbass when I bought it and got a size smaller than I should have - because the large looked like a mushroom on my head. Seems the size of my head is just above what would properly fit in a Bell size medium and it never came down far enough on my forehead. The new S-Works is a large, and looks like it'll protect my noggin a lot better if I hit the pavement. I figure if I keep the rubber side down for the next 4 years, the helmet will cost me less than $50/yr till I'm due for a new one, and if I don't, then I'll be happy to have spent the $$$ on a helmet that fit properly, kept me as cool as possible in the Texas summer heat, and had the best chances of protecting the gray matter.

I am sure that is absolutely true. After my collision (got hit head on by a car), I purchased a helmet that was more geared for road cycling. Still isn't an expensive helmet but cost more than the $20 I had. There is definitely more ventilation and this helmet is more aerodynamic - not that it matters for me, I am definitely not racing nor trying to beat anyone up the hill. Honestly, I don't even notice I'm wearing it anymore while riding though.

OK *SLAP* Just buy the damn $150 helmet!! Stop it! Fathers day is near tell your family! Make up anexcuse and just do it!! Use the bell until you have enough. You wont be jappy until you get that limar!

I didn't intend for this to turn in to a discussion of helmet design or which helmet protects better. I was just looking for some suggestions on a helmet that isn't so bulky...and doesn't have that duck-tail look in the back. I rode cruiser motorcycles for 10 years and know all about helmet designs.

Give the Bell Alchera a look. Bout $50 on sale at PerformanceBike right now, good big vents, decent looks. That was my first 'road' helmet I bought a few years back. The more expensive ones look better, but at the price point you're looking for, a decent option.
