Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Back in the early 80s when the Hawaiian Ironman was still on Wide World of Sports or something like that, there was a famous scene where Julie Moss was very, very close to the finish line and was about to win when she collapsed near the finish line and not only lost the race, but lost control of her bodily functions. That went a long way to establishing the lore of the IM being a gruel fest, and lots of people either remember it, have heard about it, or make the connection between triathlons and losing control of your bodily functions. Even when I did my first Ironman, I'm pretty sure my dad was more concerned about that than anything else.

Probably just as famous was Greta Waitz soiling herself in her very first marathon - New York. Not only did she win but knocked two minutes off the world record. It was televised live without editing

Considering that the sporting aspect of triathlon is strictly secondary to narcissism/attention-seeking, cr@pping yourself is a good substitute to get attention if you cannot afford the stupid ostentatious cervelo with 65 energy gels strapped to the top tube.

That and the mankini.

As has been said before round here, it is difficult to take seriously any sport which involves how fast you can get dressed/undressed.

Unless you're really close to a Kona spot or the podium (and not even then IMO), there's really no reason to crap yourself in an Ironman. It's a race that lasts up to 17 hours. Take the 3 minutes to poo properly. I had to smell the poop guy at Ironman Florida. It was inconsiderate of him.

Paula Radcliffe can drop a load in less than 10 seconds.

But then again, many triathletes will not even allow ten seconds to get on the bike properly (just put the frickin shoes on first), hence the farce at T1.

It's not only about time. I leave my shoes on the bike because running through transition in cleats sucks.

Won't post the Hyde Park 2010 T1 video which showed it would have been much quicker for some competitors to walk through T1....

Triathlon would have a lot more credibility if the transitions were neutralised (would solve the whole mankini fiasco also).

Short limited neutral period between entering and leaving transition - what is reasonable - 2-3 minutes?

(Facepalm)

If I have to explain that, then you probably don't have any kids yet either.
