Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shifting "kathunk"

I'm very new to road cycling (new bike about a month ago) and i've been experiencing a "kathunk" sort of sound when shifting, as i'm new to this I don't know if it's supposed to sound like this or not. It happens infrequently but more often than not, doesn't seem to matter if i'm shifting harder or easier, bike is orbea aqua 105.

what i've recently done to it is cleaned the chain (degreased / lubed) & fallen over a few times due to clipless-fail.

Any E-diagnosis would be most welcome if this isn't normal

It sounds like you're putting too much stress on the chain when shifting. Ease off pedaling hard for about a half crank rotation while you shift, it'll shift much quieter.

Thanks so much! I just look it out for a spin and that's solved it. now I just have to get in the practice of pedaling like that

Sure. It becomes second nature pretty soon. You shouldn't have to ease up for that long, or stop pedaling or anything. Just a little stress relief for a split second.

Also remember that after a couple of hundred miles of riding, the cable may stretch a bit. You may need to adjust the cable tension once again. Enjoy your new ride!
As mentioned above, try not to mash the pedal while shifting.

Sounds like someone replaced your 105 with Sram

My experience is that there are two or three shifts on the rear that are more "kuthunk-y" than the rest. The #7 and 8 cogs (I think) usually have a kuthunk more than the others as I'm heading towards the smallest cogs.

105 is a rather nice group and should have crisp shifting. My SRAM force sounds like that................nothing wrong with it, just can't sneak up on people while shifting like I can with my Dura Ace stuff.
