Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was 185 lbs at the doctor's yesterday. That's ridiculous. I should be <175 by now. Good grief. My metabolism is in full 50+ mode.

No more Oreos for me. Man, I have to figure this out. I used to race @ <170. Gotta figure out a way to get down to 175 and STAY there until March. That won't be easy.

PCad, at least at this weight we're burning more calories than the toothpicks (according to the article).

Oh, wait, the 50+ metabolism probably isn't factored in. Us old fat guys are working harder for less benefit. Time to grow a [gray]beard and buy a recumbent.

LOL...if it's in the NY Times it's got to be crapola. They are using Paul Krugman math.

Pcad, to you this is a hobby, not a sport.

Not only am I too fat for this sport, my bike is too fat for this sport as well. I just removed the fenders and rack (Texas Time Trials coming up) and was in the shop, and noticed their scale hanging there. So I asked if I could weigh it, seeing as how people are always commenting on the weight. The guy says, no, he's not sure the thing the scale is hanging from will support it. Grrr. I did try the bathroom scale technique at home, though, and it weighs 31.4 lbs. That's without the seat bag or pump, but with pedals and lights.

The newsflash for you is that for 99% of its participants (and your customers) the same observation does apply. Pass the word along to the idiots @ Zipp, Saris, Sram, Cervelo, Shimano, Scott, Cannondale, etc., etc.

Besides, without this hobby, I'd be fatter still, which is a very, very scary thought indeed.

I topped out at 176 (5'11") last Thanksgiving. Decided to give the "paleo/low carb/micro managed carb" thing a try. I dropped 20 lbs in 3 months. Now I waver between 150 and 155. Not too bad for an old Cat Fiver.

This kind of reminds me of when I was in high school and my best friend and I had a competition to get the lowest body fat percentage. We were down to 4% when the school changed the caliper policy so that only the athletic trainer could administer the test. We were so disappointed that we had to call it a tie. We've tried the same competition since, but have thrown in mandatory drinks and BBQ at Redbones etc. to make it interesting.

Paleo this. I take it there are no Milanos on the Paleo Diet.

Time trialing through house? Based on the spartan appearance, it looks like all your cash went into the bike. Good luck with that. Mine used to look like that when I was splitting living expenses with a teammate.

Your rear looks flat. It will make it tough to make the turn by the fridge.
