Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

roughing it is cool, but i have no bike mechanic skills beyond the basics. so, i can rough it, after somone else puts my bike together.

Dude, if you can unscrew things and screw them back up, you know all you need to know!! It will come down to which bike case you end up using. Even then, you'll be fine with minimal to no bike mechanic skills.

I saw some of these roads and villages in an episode of "Top Gear". I really want to go there.

Thanks for depressing me with all these awesome pictures---stuck down here in flat Florida!! All kidding aside, I concur the Dolimites are perhaps the best place to ride a bike in the world---stunning backdrops with just endless climbs to choose from----thanks for sharing your trip pics----Chiangale is a tour company I look forward to touring with someday---almost did it once but had to cancel the trip unfortunately.

Here's to the Stelvio, among others!!

It was 20-25°F here today. I used to ride no matter what but I'm trying to save my knees for more of these types of trips. Here are some more pictures from the trip:

Passo dello Stelvio from the Prato side. You've probably seen a similar picture before from other cycling enthusiasts. The real kicker is that from this view, you are already half-way up the climb! But you still have to go through the zig-zag gauntlet:

The Stelvio glacier was there when I first climbed it in August of 2010 and it was there in 2011. I'm betting it was there long before global warming and it will be there long after global warming.

Bormio at night-time. There is Bar Capriccio right below, which can get pretty nuts on Saturday nights but I guess the noise level is pretty tame compared to some parts of NYC.

Here are some pictures that I did not take but I finally had a chance look at, of the Zoncolan experience:

One more month until we all start putting in the big miles with smiles!

I've been to Italy several times, including watching the Giro di Lombardia twice, but I haven't ridden there. It's definitely on my "bucket list". Of course riding the Zoncolan or Stelvio may make me actually kick the bucket!

And to borrow a line from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, regarding Andy Hampsten, "He's a righteous dude!"

When I am 60+ and an empty-nester, I want to do that trip so badly, the cooking part, mainly because AH, at 80+, will still probably be kicking ass and taking names on the road.

I highly recommend going through the Dolomites as opposed to the Alps if you have to choose. Stay far away from the Zoncolan if you don't like climbing!
