Do you guys carry your expensive phones with you when you ride?

Yes, it goes in my handlebar bag. Its not "waterproof", but I recently rode hours in the rain, some of it a pretty good downpour, and it was fine.

I stick mine in my Jersey pocket. It isn't expensive though. I don't know why you would ever need half the crap you pay for when you get a iphone. (And I'm 21 so not just some old guy ranting against tech.)

i have my iphone on a top tube bag near the steer tube, the handlebars and shifters would be damaged first, plus the phone has a durable case on it.

I bought my first cell phone solely because I started riding. I keep it in a Ziploc bag with my driver license and a photocopy of my medical insurance card (center jersey pocket).

I didn't pay attention when putting my phone in my saddle bag, and the impact from a manhole cover cracked the screen against the saddle clamp. Now I swap my SIM card into an old phone and put a boxed patch kit on top to absorb bumps.

I carry my Samsung smartphone in my seatbag. I guess it's an expensive phone, but I didn't pay much for it. Good contract renewal discount.
It could be useful in case of an emergency or insurmountable breakdown. It takes pretty good pictures too.

Phone in a ziplock, along with some cash, and a housekey - all in a jersey pocket. Cheap phone though.

On my road bike I just put it in my back jersey pocket.
On my mountain bike some sort of crashing is a fact of life, so I bought this Pelican case from REI - it fits either my phone or my camera -
Supposedly it's waterproof. I think it's the 1015. They also make a more iPod specific version that lets you listen to music while the phone is in the case -
https://www.rei.com/product/800681/pelican-i1015-case
This thing fits in my Specialized underseat bag. It's probably the larger mountain biking one, but it was pretty cool that it fit.
I never go biking without my phone. Sometimes other people have trouble with the concept that you don't have to answer your phone, but being of the younger generation that's pretty much the norm for me. There's two good reasons to always have my phone with me -
1. Emergencies - crash (hopefully the phone survives), or less fatal things (one winter I biked most of the way to my dads place - only to find that the city hadn't plowed the path all the way like it had before, being able to call for a pickup rather than taking an additional hour to get there walking was great).
2. Gps - my phone has gps on it, google maps, and it's really reassuring and helpful for those times when doing a new route, a group ride, etc to know that if I get lost, can't figure it out, etc I have a gps with me that lets me figure out the route back - or at worst at least tells me which direction the point I started from is so I can figure it out.

I think its a huge generational thing. On top of that, some of us just love being "techies". Try it out sometime, I think you'd find it a lot more helpful than you might think not.

I have an HTC Evo, one of the larger phones and it fits perfectly in the case logic neoprene MP3 player case, like the one found below.. It zips up nicely and fits in my jersey pocket with no problems.

I stem mount my iPhone as my GPS. It's also good to have a phone in case of emergency and taking photos/videos for "evidence."
