This year, things are not so good. The Star-Ledger reports, "Three fatal shootings in the last two days pushed Newark’s homicide total to 29 this year, a 71 percent jump in killings compared with the same period in 2010, as violent crime surges following police layoffs." Last fall, due to budget constraints (and an impasse between unions and the city), 167 Newark police officers were laid off, the most in over 30 years. It was such a huge drop in cops that the Guardian Angels said they would send its members to patrol the streets. Overall crime has increased by 21% and police arrests (a sign of police productivity) has fallen by 22%. A Booker administration spokesperson said, "Our city has grown too strong in recent years to allow levels of violence to increase to where they were in 2006 and before. … We will continue to employ innovative policing measures to ensure that Newark will not accept anything less than strength, peace and security," but an official with Newark's police union, the Fraternal Order of Police, said, "I think it just comes down to the people on the street. The bad guys know we’re not out there, and it has an effect on how they operate. That’s why the shootings have increased dramatically, that’s why the homicides are up." Earlier today, Booker Tweeted, "Faith can move mountains, but don't be surprised if God hands you a shovel." http://gothamist.com/2011/04/26/newa..._71_higher.php http://media.nj.com/ledgerupdates_im...6961-large.jpg |
but now that they aren't active duty cops they quit raping. |
You'll have to tell all the inordinate number of one percenters who choose to live in Jersey they should leave, they seem blissfully unaware of the problems.
Newsflash: Alpine and Saddle River are a long way from Newark and the refineries in the meadowlands. We'd be living pretty close to the latter. North America's largest Mercedes dealership is in Paramus. Let that be your guide. |

Yes Northern NJ is nice but you were bashing NY so turnaround is fair play. |

so if correlation = causation then we have to assume that those laid off police officers committed several of the aggravated assaults and 50% of the rapes

I have no idea why I'm asking this question here. http://smud-carbon.eu/saddle.html Contemplating one myself actually. You might want to try the diet thread, if you really want another boat anchor of a saddle. A few guys in there run that heavy Fizik thing. |
My ass loves the Aliante.

If we reset American immigration today, with air conditioning, in 10 years there would be more people in Charleston, SC than there would be in NYC. |

There is still the matter of access to the interior, but yeah - if we throw technological history and geography out of the window, a lot of things might be different.

No one lives in Newark on purpose! I lived in Pompton Plains, NJ for a year and it was great. It was all Norman Rockwell up in there back in 1980-81. And there was still good pizza.
I think trains are efficient enough vs riverboats. And they don't kill salmon as much. |

2. You can't get very far upriver in any of those boats, please find graph with river barges. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2566/3...8193bec8_o.jpg Container Barges by WHO 2003, on Flickr |
