My Cateye computer doesn't fit 31.8

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Cateye computer doesn't fit 31.8

Bought a new Cannondale R1000z this weekend. I found a steal on a Cateye Enduro 2 computer (not the new Enduro 8) at the REI Scratch and Dent sale ($8). It doesn't look like the computer had been used before and it looks like it works fine. When I tried to install it, I found that the handelbar bracket doesn't fit my 31.8 handlebars.

Here's what I see for my options:

1) Bike Nashbar has a mounting kit that says it works for this computer and will fit 31.8 handlebars. It's probably another $16 investment (plus a little wait to get the hardware). Total investment under this option is around $24.

2) I can get a Sigma Sport 1200 computer that mounts with rubber bands and will fit a 31.8 handlebar. This will cost around $22. If I do this, I'll need to try to sell the Enduro computer to recoup my investment (or maybe mount it on my old bike, since I can't seem to find the computer that goes on that bike).

Is there any reason why I should go through the extra effort to keep the Cateye?

Try calling CatEye. I was rather amazed that they sent me a whole new bracket for my CatEye CD300W for free.

Rubber bands?? Doesn't sound too secure.

Go to Nashbar and buy an Astrale 8 (with cadence) for $30. Mount the Enduro on your old bike and be happpy all the way around.

That's what happened when I bought my Lemond. Performance had a mounting kit that fit. I contact Cateye first, though, if there's a chance to get one free. Someone posted here before about a mount for the stem.

One of the computer mounts actually goes on the stem. It uses black rubber o-rings. It keeps the computer out of the way. My thinking is the o-rings would be affected by the sunlight after a while.

I'd contact Cateye and speak with their Customer Service. They are really awesome and will prolly send you a free mounting bracket for your Cateye computer.

I have 2 Astale 8's and have had no problem mounting them on both 26 and 31.8 bars. I wonder why the mount would be different on the enduro.

Cateye also has brackets that mount on the stem (fixed with two narrow tie-rips)

The mount is the older type that goes around the bar and then clamps with one screw. The other mounting kits use a longer adjustable piece that works like a zip tie, or the bracket that mounts the sensor on the fork. They probably haven't converted the older brackets over yet.

Interesting. I was installing a CateEye Astrale 8 yesterday (Xmas present). I put on the extra zip ties to make sure the wires were tidied up, and the speed readout stopped (when I went for a ride, of course). Turns out that a zip tie had pinched the cable to the speed sensor. After an appropriate amount of cursing, I logged on to their web site and ordered a sensor kit ($20 after you add in shipping), and also sent them feedback that they should supply some "spaghetti" wrap to protect the cables better and also have the cables plug into the sensors so that people in my situation could just order the cabling instead of the entire sensor kit (2 sensors - one speed, one cadence).

I found the bar bracket was a tiny bit loose, so I shimmed it up with a piece of inner tube.

Sucks that you wrecked it already. I'm sure you did, but did you loosen the zip tie and see if the speed function returned? I wonder how hard you cranked on the tie...I've installed two and haven't had any issues yet. Of course, I've just jinxed myself. You probably got a bad wire from the start, I bet it had a short in it before you attached it and using the zip tie did it in.

That's adjustable. They provide a small piece of rubber to pad the bars but the bracket has a sliding part that can be tightened or loosened.

Hope your new wire doesn't get smushed.

Enduro 2 is made for MTB and as there are no 31.8 handlebars in MTB world it was never expected to be used on road bikes, although you'd have no problem to get it to work on regular-sized bars... But call Cateye they are really pretty helpful...

Also, the Cateye Mity 8 has same functions as your Enduro and you can get it for $15.00 but I'd go with Astrale 8, as it has cadence, which is pretty useful in road cycling... Also, get a one with rear speed sensor, if you ever plan to use your bike on a trainer... You'll thank me later...

Mount the computer a little over to one side away from the bluge and it should mount just fine, unless you got some funky ergonomic bars.
