Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sidewall hole, slavageable?

I noticed on my ride in to work today that my front tire has a rupture in the sidewall. Is there anything I can do to keep using the tire or is it done for? Hoping I make it home tonight without incident.

I carry Parks Tire Boots.
Use a dollar bill folded on the inside of the hole to get you home.

Can I put a boot on it and ride it for the rest of it's normal life?

Depends on the damage to the cords.

My last Parks boot lasted 300 miles. The tire had been cut by a piece of metal.

You can make it home without doing anything to it. It isn't too bad. I would patch it from the inside and not worry about it. If you race or frequent speeds over 25mph + I would think about replacing it.

I really don't understand the frequent desire to risk personal safety by riding on a less than excellent tire when it is not necessary. Yes, boot it with a dollar bill to get home then replace it asap.

A new tire is as cheap as $20, which is much less expensive than surgery for a broken collarbone and tegaderm for the road rash.

Safety?? nothing will happen... that needs to be patched from the inside and done with it.

For the record a 20 bucks clincher is a real POS, many here spend 100 bucks per pop. If you get 20 bucks clinchers then is understandable but at 100 bucks a pop is not an option for something so small. And that clincher looks like a continental, not a 15 bucks verdersntein or what ever are called.

I have had 96 road flats with No Crashes, including Blowouts on the front tire.

that tire is a Continental GP 4000 / 4000S which is way the hell more than $20. at my LBS they are $70 each. online you can maybe score a pair for $80 - 90 shipped.

It's actually a gatorskin (which oddly enough had a puncture flat yesterday).

I got a sidewall gash 2 X that size on the front of a set of Conti GP 4S tires during Battenkill. Still riding & racing them.

Easy mistake as the 4000/4000s seem to be the official bikeforum tire of choice

Definitely. I got an off-center gash in a tire several hundred miles ago, the tube was bulging out the hole and everything. I patched it from the inside with a vulcanizing patch and since then all has been fine. I do carry a spare tire on long rides, though, in case it really rips apart again.

Since when is a flat tire a free trip to the ER? Planet Earth has seen about 0 cases of that.

a boot may or may not work. if the pic shows the tire inflated as you like it, it looks pretty good as is. if the pic shows the tire deflated. put a boot in it or patch it from the inside (as recommended) and take a look. the bulge, if any, and your judgement will determine whether or not it is salvageable. i've ridden on a couple of damaged tires that bulged a mm or two for quite a while.
