Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 500 course

Hi GUys,

Wife and I are just about to leave for some cycling in the Alps, and I was thinking of downloading courses to store in our Garmin 500s. Do we need the tcx files or the crs files?

I would use RideWithGPS to map the ride, and download the TCX file to your Garmin. At least that's what I've found to be the best method for me.

Most mapping sites will have an option for .GPX files. That's really all you need. TCX is a newer-generation file format that supports the recording of additional data points, such as heart rate, cadence, etc., but you don't care about that if you're just looking for directions. All of the sites I've seen with GPS-capable maps supply .GPX files.
