Amateur doping in NY

When you're 55+ (my racing age is 55) you're on so many medications the doping tests would never see the EPO underneath anyway.

It's not like there aren't plenty of people in the regular population taking all kinds of crap for medical/recreational/whatever reasons. Who cares if people dope for these events?

They're competing for $100k in prizes. I suspect the guys who don't win care if the guys who win are cheating. But that's just me. In fact any one who competes cares if their competitors are cheating.

It does degrade the experience, but the top prize is a bike which is unimpressive considering the number of people. It's unclear to me where prizes end and the raffle begins but the stuff isn't exactly mind boggling. If people are serious about competition and winnings, this doesn't quite strike me the right place to be.

Not really, not in amateur racing. Ironically these Grand Frodo idiots charge such a massive entry fee (hundreds) they can afford things like computer timing chips and doping control that amateur race organizers can't. This guy failed the Grand Frodo doping control. If those jerks had asked me to pee into a cup after a Grand Frodo I would have told them to bite me.

Hi all,
As this is making the rounds in New York at the moment, I thought I'd like to share.
Two cyclists tested positive for EPO at Gran Fondo New York on May 20, 2012. David Anthony of New York City admitted today to having used the drug to enhance his performance at bike races. Gabriele Guarini from Prato, Italy accepted the results of his A sample.

There's also a discussion going on at one of the dopers team's homepage.
I remember being a little baffled by the likelihood of doping controls at the GFNY. Guess they had a point.

Anthony obviously wasn't doping for financial gain or to advance a racing career; he almost certainly spent more obtaining the EPO than he won in prizes, and is not about to join a pro team.
If it was a non-competitive ride, and he was under medical supervision, he could take whatever he likes. Since it's a competition, PED's are out.

@gsteinb: Thanks for pointing that out. I've changed the original post to reflect your comment.

It's still a competitive event. David Anthony apparently won his age group (45-49), not sure about the other guy.

no he couldn't. he's licensed by USAC and is subject to testing by the USADA.

The vast majority of amateur competitors who ride clean, like my pal gsteinb, who trains harder than you can ever possibly even friggin imagine to succeed in amateur racing. That's who cares. That's a pretty stupid question, but you are nothing if not consistent.
Eff the dopers, particularly on the amateur level. They piss me off, they should piss all of us off.

The whole reason categories, age groups, and all the other things we use to divide people exist is so that there is some competition since all of these people would otherwise be thrashed when thrown together with people they can't compete with. Intentionally doing things to alter the outcome undermines the entire reason these divisions exist and it's pathetic. May as well compete in the womens' categories since they're probably not DNA testing yet.

He won a gold bottle opener
and a jersey. So it was obviously worth the risk.

Doesn't matter. It's competitive, that's why they have doping controls. They don't have that at a century ride which is not formally competitive.

Anthony was doping for all his races, not just GFNY. He just happened to get caught there because USAC doesn't test much.

Never underestimate the ego manifestations of a Type A personality upper middle class white male. I'm going to demand drug testing after some of my local group rides.
