Those with small children
Those of you that have small children ages 2 to 10, how do you find the time to ride so many miles?
Say commuting to work is not an option how do you find the time?
Do you wake up early? Ride late at night? Ride rollers or trainer?

I have the same problem, 2 kids under 3. I end up doing all my weekday riding after dark. I am lucky enough to live in a pretty small town surrounded by empty county roads, it just makes it tough to get as many miles as I want without staying out until midnight.

I have a cargo bike that my 6 year old sits on the back whenever we go anywhere that is unsafe for him to ride his own bike, and my 11 year old rides along side us. Weve been doing it this way for awhile. Then I do my own thing a couple times a week at night or early morning, in addition to commuting to work

I don't.
Not enough anyways. Running pre-dawn a couple times/week, try to get one or two dawn rides in and go in to work late (too far to ride), otherwise lucky if I can get more than 50 miles a week. Even doing a Sat or Sun morning ride is hard since my wife needs a break from them too! Kids are 1 and 3.5. Hoping it will get better in a couple years when they're a little more self-sufficient.

Sorry, I was going to suggest commuting. I actually get many more miles during the week than on the weekends.

We have three little ones, a 5yr old, 3yr old, and 20 months. Both my wife and I try to work our schedules around each other so that one of us is always home with the children. It helps that I work per-diem for 2 different hospitals/clinics and choose the day(s) when I want to work. My wife is also a nursing coordinator for a local hospital and works 1 weekend a month.
95% of my riding is done on the weekends, and I'm usually out on the road by 630-7am. I usually try to squeeze in a ride mid-week, a routine 15-25 mile loop just to keep the legs loose but I always look forward to my weekend rides.
With our two oldest starting Kindergarten and Pre-K this Sept, I'll be able to add in an extra day or two of riding time during the week with the baby in tow.

I try to ride two/three times in the morning Monday-Friday. In the weekend I also ride at least one day very early and after that ride I pickup my toddler and my wife for a another ride... speed dictated by my wife. My kid rides with me in a bike seat behind me (a trailer will be necessary probably next year). The truth is, I cannot ride as much miles as I would like but hey, better something than nothing!

Try to ride early in the morning (6:30)
Commuting isnt impossible. You can always find excuses NOT TO. If you really want to commute youll find the way. But youd have to talk/compromise with your partner to reach balance.
Good luck

My wife is awesome. I'll usually do a quick 5 or 6 miler after my dinner digests on my road bike, then come back and get her and the kids to all four do a slow cruise around on the hybrid pulling our 3 year old in the trailer, and our 6 year old riding on her single speed. I get in 8-10 miles most weekdays that way.
On the weekends, I get up early and knock out some nice, longer rides and get home by the time the kids are getting up and rolling.

Not safe for a 34lb two year old. That's assuming it fits, which it won't.

I have three kids...7, 5 and 3 weeks old. I guess I probably don't train like some of the hardcore members on this board, but I carve out 1-2 hours every night to get my rides in. My wife understands that I need this time for exercise, stress relief and solitude. I'm lucky that she understands the value in this activity and gives me that time. If for some reason I need to be home and cover for her with the kids during that time, I'll throw my bike on my trainer and do an hour while I also keep an eye on the kids. On weekends, I get up at dawn and do my long ride as the sun comes up and am usually home by late morning. I guess it depends on your goals. My goal is to stay physically fit, reduce stress and take on a few centuries a year. This routine allows me to do this.

My kids also play in organized sports, sometimes 2-3 sports at a given time so it gets even more difficult to ride after work.
I do ride on the week-ends as some of you have pointed out, the trainer is something that I am missing.
Maybe I will pickup a trainer or rollers for our winter months.

When you kids are that age, you have to do it before they get up or after they go to bed. Spin bike at the gym is my option. My first organized ride of this year was a century in April. Because of my wife's work schedule and bad weather, I did not take one single ride on a real bike before the ride. In fact, because of projected bad weather I spent the night before the ride putting fenders on one of my bikes and getting it prepped for the ride. Every bit of training for that ride was done in spin classes and on stationary bikes at the gym. Talk about boring! Nothing beats going to the gym around 10pm for a 3 hour ride on a stationary bike!
