Me too. But around here even the hiking trails are pretty well traveled.
If every yahoo decided it was okay to toss all their apple cores, banana peels and all the other crap that they think eventually bio-degrades, it would be pretty disgusting to take a hike.

I bring my wrappers to the nearest garbage can, and home if I can't find one on the way. Sadly, I wind up picking up crap left behind by other cyclists, too, when I can. Lots of tubes and CO2 cartridges wind up on the side of the road in beautiful places.
We just found out who's dumping their garbage...
Now we can get back to the thousand "what handlebars should I buy?" threads.

That is sort of unacceptable, and something I would not expect most cyclists to do. I never noticed it myself. Whenever I have a wrapper or something I just stuff them in my jersey pockets. I mean, even to the biggest weight weenie this is negligible weight. I just dont see why anyone would throw it on the road.

I have lived in the country or in very small towns for most of my life. It is disgusting all the crap these people driving, or cycling by, think they can toss into the ditches or fields or orchards.
I wonder how they'd feel if I came by and dumped apple cores, banana peels, papertowels, and other crap on their front lawn.

So you wouldn't mind if I came by your place and dumped a bunch of "organic refuse" on your front lawn?

Same can be said about dog ****, which people don't mind leaving behind? Does it bother you that wildlife leaves **** behind in the forest instead of bagging it up and burying it at a "designated" area?
We actually throw our peels directly at the base of our hedges. They really don't last long, especially with the heat we've been having.

I just eat all of it.

As long as wildlife doesn't use papertowel or other so-called bio-degradable materials to clean up after themselves and leave all of that lying around ...

I was on a group ride a few weeks ago where another cyclist flatted and used CO2 to fill the spare tube. Of course the moron left the cartridge laying on the side of the road as he took off. I came back and picked it up. I just don't get it, those things weigh nothing and the dude was already were carrying it, why on earth would he leave it on the side of the road after he used it? Pick your crap up!!!

Piles of it on a lawn is different than more or less hidden in brush and trees beside trails. I do not throw papers and other obvious litter on the ground while walking on the trails in the woods near my house. A banana peel off in the trees is not a big deal.

i think their point is if everyone that went down the trail everyday ate a banana and threw their peel out, it would pile up and stink and be ugly... but i dont think that many people eat fruit on the trails anyway.... grandpa always said it was ok to throw out fruit scraps, and he was never wrong about anything....

Why toss anything? Please ... just don't. If you lived in the country you'd see that it is more than "a few organic materials here and there" ... you'd see that people who pass through areas of fields and trees figure they can use those spots as their dumping grounds. After all ... the field or forest is large, who's going to notice a few bits and pieces of rubbish ... until half the people going by start dumping stuff.
People live in the country. People own land out there. We like the country to look clean and pristine ... but it's hard when litterers drop stuff everywhere.
I take it none of you litterers cycle in a fruit orchard area?? You'd have a whole different perspective from the nonsense about it being OK to throw out fruit scraps.

I feel guilty about discarding banana peels. In my local area, I have seen banana peels on the road, but along the side of the road I don't think you would notice a gel container because of all the trash the motorists throw out. How you can drive through a beautiful natural area and dump trash is something I will never understand. Don't think much of those people anyway, but that's just ridiculous.

But the stuff that drops off the trees onto the ground gets eaten by birds and insects, and decomposes just like the fruit scrap that is thrown on the ground. Does it not?

Sorry ... but you don't get it. You obviously have no knowledge of the fruit industry.Orchardists are very protective of their particular stock. You can't go dropping any old fruit near fruit orchards.

Let's also keep in mind that many countries have littering laws with fairly hefty fines ... even for dropping the smallest items like a piece of chewing gum, in some cases.
Go look up your state/provincial laws regarding littering and post them back here.

if you think thats bad, guess what i have to put up with?
idiots dumping their water...and not just in ditches, but in forests and parks...my neighbor EVEN SPRAYS IT ON HIS LAWN!
i was all like gtfo nayburr y u gun dew dat?
i live in a rural area. ever had a pear or apple tree? they fall a lot. bees, yellow jackets, etc come by...sometimes at night skunks, possum, or dogs eat it. as stated earlier, it takes under 5 weeks MAX for fruit and vegetables to disappear (degrade or eaten). you wouldnt believe how fast egg shells and banana peels can disappear into plants.
you are completely blowing this out of proportion. do you often have large pelotons discard organic matter into the earth areas around you?
#48
i hope this does not blow your mind, but i have and will continue to pee outdoors. does this need to stop too? of course, orchards displace plants and animals natural to the environment. is that a bigger issue?
even worse, i have seen people destroy strips of earth in order to make a path for people to ride bicycles. shameful.

Why is it so hard? Just don't litter. There's no need for it. If you bring it with you to the country, take it away too.

I knew there would be an argument in here sooner or later.
