FYI - in order for a website/forum to get sponsors, it's based on the amount of time folks spend on each page and the # of hits. One website I know made $2M/yr. It's big biz. Do you work for BF since you post all the time?

Singing is quite subjective, as evidenced there are plenty of singers that people love to hate (B. Manilow, M. Bolton, etc.) who are among the most successful recording artists. So while you're sitting there telling me how much W. Houston sucks, she sold millions upon millions of records. Somebody likes the singers you hate, or you wouldn't even know their names.
Note I didn't say they suck. I said I dislike. |

TS, thanks for pointing out that I'm a winner for being a loser. :thumb: sniff sniff
Was iJen hypocritical? Yep. Did she sling her share of barbs? Yep. Was she part of your sad Addiction family? Yep. I'm with SA on moving on, but I also was only in here for 6 or 7 months when it happened. You guys had years of relationship. In the word's of Rodney King, "EFF all you pigs." |
If a group of crows is a murder, and a group of whales is a pod, I wonder if a group of thin skinned people is a thread?

Strange things happening, Solo is starting to seem the most mature one visiting addiction. Cool beans.

My point is that there is thick skin in the traditional sense; not allowing criticism get to you, then there is the internet brand of thick skin, which is an industrial grade asbestos body suit. I come in here (this thread) for entertainment. For the most part, that's what happens - entertainment. A loosely run thread on a loosely run board is bound to spill over the boundaries of civility and common courtesy. This has been the most contentious Addiction I have been a part of, mostly because as sbxx1985 pointed out, I 'bad mouthed' this thread for its most recognized trait - padding post count. So shoot me - I bad mouthed a thread. So, let me 'splain...no, too much. Let me sum up. I'll do my part to keep it civil, but only because that body suit is uncomfortable and I can't drink my coffee while wearing it. |

I am a member of several other forums on various topics, from cars to cell phones to muscular dystrophy and Parkinson's. None of them are as loosely run as this board. Over the years, I have allowed myself (and still do on occasion) to be provoked for no good reason, and I retaliate in kind. I have gotten better at letting it go, but I am not perfect.

Having been a part of internet forums since their inception and been moderating since then as well I find it hard to believe that anyone with a wealth of experience would find this to be the most loosely run of boards. I also find it a bit unbelievable that a) one finds calling someone out on getting a DUI or calling someone out on cheating in a sanctioned event and then lying to folks who are purportedly their friends as the break down of civility. I assure you I'd say the same things to either of their faces because I find the actions to be reprehensible as they go against the very fabric of my life. As I also pointed out I appreciate SA's contrition and I wish him well in his search for answers to life's questions.
The truth is that on a board this size it's impossible to keep folks happy with moderation decisions. Some folks want free reign to sling barbs and tell one another to eff off (moderators spend a significant amount of time simply correcting folks from going around the filter). Others want a place that they perceive as safe to develop close ties without the sense of anonymity. It's nearly impossible to keep both ends of the spectrum happy. Take into account also the absurd amount of spam we have to deal with, sock puppets, banned members and that we all do it on a volunteer basis. We get nothing for it, other than grief. No one ever, and I mean ever, thanks the moderators for anything. I don't fault them, on the boards I don't moderate I don't do so either. Good moderation is background and appears seamless. The most basic fact of the matter is that moderators are both participants and moderators here. Moderation decisions occur in concert with others. They do not act alone, and there is a team of admins to appeal to. It's actually extremely balanced, and in my experience of the interweb rather fair. It has seemed to me, and this extends beyond my term as a moderator that those who have railed against the moderators here have mostly been of the 'see me' variety and really simply don't play well in a sandbox with others. |
RollCNY. We've had worse. The month when whooshie coined whyfi, jones and me "the three stooges" was pretty contentious. Little did we know how funny whooshie was (always knew he had good taste in bikes). Or the blowout between pcad and me. Or the wagon. The name calling between iJen and VeloVol over the addiction time trial.
Any time there is a group of opinionated people together, there will be ebbs and flows of civility. This group has been pretty good about calling each other out, and then kissing and making up. |
Nice use of the Indigo Montoya quote.
This is my only forum experience, no BookFace or Tweeter either. I have found civility to be decent in general, but maybe that is just me. My practice is that I will pm someone if I think that I have offended them, and try to have a conversation to the side. I assumed that to be the norm. I think this thread has many intelligent people in it, and the conversation can go from high brow to base in a heart beat. I enjoy talking with intelligent people, so I loiter here. The night of the kitten control debate upset me, not because of what was discussed. I thought we were openly exchanging ideas and that it was fairly civil. The fact that people get upset about the frank discussion of issues is what will be the undoing of intelligent discourse in society. The polarization wins. But I,m going to go ride outside for the first time in weeks. Booyah. |
