Too bad you are not closer. I could trade you run/bike tips in exchange for swim help.

How much are you running?? And how much cycling?

datlas 02-10-13 04:35 PM

BTW Humbug, if I can maintain a run pace of roughly 8 minutes/ mile, what's the rough equivalent swim pace per 100m?? 2 minutes?? Less??

You could always start being a fan of a good team. Like, I don't know, the Ravens. ;)

I used to like (pity) the giants, but now that they've had a little success they're starting to get on my frikkin' nerves.

You know, division rivals and all.

I would totally do that. My run is actually solid, but bike... wow am I a basket case.

Running 35-40mpw. Short loop is 4.9 miles; long loop is 8.3. On the bike, by contrast, I'm doing 2-3 rides per week. Usually both Gray and Starr King from TrainerRoad, and often a third day of an easy group ride for actual riding practice, or an easier TR workout to get some extra kJ in without compromising the FTP workouts. Typically with 2-3 swim days as well.

This is going to be a rough few days for me, training-wise, since after doing myself proud on my TR power test I now have a sore throat, so it'll be a couple days of rest and early bed. Grumble.

The Ravens won this year. They're definitely a good team. My boys have won more in the past decade, however, so I'll still call them good.

And see, the getting on nerves thing is how I feel about the Redskins. RG3 has me worried for the future, if his knee heals up and stays solid.

I started watching in 2007. Don't really care about old news like that. ;)

Is that your race pace or training pace? In any case, I'd call the equivalent pace something in the 1:30-1:40 range, at least in a short-course pool. In open water, no wetsuit, a bit slower than that. It's really hard to make a comparison, but I'd expect you to be able to get at least down towards 1:45/100 by the meat of tri season with just working on form.

Rule of thumb is that, for a hypothetical neutral athlete, I'd expect 5k run times to be relatively congruous to 1500m swim times. Again, that'd just be a very loose guideline.

Current training pace is 8-8.5 minute miles. If short run like 4-5 miles can maintain no problem. Longer run like 8-10 miles pace is more like 8:30. That's zone 2-3. No recent race but I think race pace for 5k or 10k would be approx 7 minute miles. Not amazing but respectable. My swim sucks, my goal is to get down to 2 mins/100m training pace, but now about 2:20. Slow.

PS. thanks for the rule of thumb.

A 7:00 race pace is better than a lot of triathletes. However, make absolutely sure not to get caught up in trying to make up too much time on the bike - my bread and butter is running down bike studs who tried to push their advantage. Swim is where you'll make your gains, clearly.

At your pace, in what I assume to be decent shape, I'd be figuring your real issue is body position and stroke - I have trouble swimming as slow as 1:45/100 in the pool (not trying to brag here, just giving an idea of what I mean). That's the pace for hopping in and swimming at a sort of cruising speed. Being slower than that makes me suspect you're not pulling very efficiently and fighting the water with your body. Focus on technique rather than trying to swim harder.

Yes. I know that. Work in progress.

BTW I have no problem cruising at 20MPH on the bike. Nyah!

I only did one tri last year. Very late in the swim but I passed all the fish on the bike, and held my own on the run.

I rode the MTB for 2 hours. Again. But this riding the MTB over snow-packed roads in the 20º cold @ 12 mph is getting old.

I'm thinking about upgrading to an S5 frame just to give you morons something to talk about. The bike gets nothing but the most rave reviews.

I don't care. How's that for conversation?

Think of it as improving your bike handling skills. And, it's still better for you than TV.

I can hold a 20mph average on the bike (yes GPSed)... when rested... on a mostly flat course... for 15 miles or so. And mind you, I'm wobbly when I get off. Definitely not my "cruising no problem" speed.

Remember, a triathlon is a running race in disguise. And for the record, I spend a ton of my run time in the 8:30 range, and even slower on the trails, and can knock out a slightly sub-20:00 5k. Don't be afraid to trade some intensity for volume.

Can we talk about how ugly it is?

Those ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it. Maybe one dark night the present owner will sneak off with the team to some team-less city and set up the new Ravens, maybe the Knoxville Ravens, and all Baltimore will be in mourning.

It's growing on me.

But I'll probably wait a year or two, sell all the old crap and just drop the coin on a whole new bike with Di2+ 11 speed.

Fugly, fugly, fugly, fugly. Why buy fugly. So many attractive bikes that are well made.

Riding>swimming>>>>>>>>>>>running

Damn do I hate running. I do it anyway because it is so convenient.

Sorry VV, had a hot lunch date. Now it's dark and cloudy. Shoulda dragged her out to do some trainspotting while it was still sunny, cuz you know that always works ;)

Since bidding her adieu I have scored a pair of Cyclone pedals. Perhaps I'll snap a pic of them for you here in a bit...
