I am also paranoid. The paranoia has been proved right though. I have a linked in account and recently in the suggested people to link to appeared my friend from school. On his profile he had no mention of the school. We do different kinds of work with no mutual work contacts. The recommendation showed no connection between us via others. How did linked in know that my profile matches his? I did no trawl through my email addresses. Very freaky.

That ship has already sailed. People who want to find out about you can find out about you. They don't need a Twitter account.

I put it down to culture. They are so robotic and narrow minded and short sighted. If it isn't immediately related to a task they are dealing with, they see no value in knowing about something let alone discussing it.

Perfect example I came across recently. I was talking about something that was in the news about something that happened in America. The person I was talking with was interested in applying to grad school in America. He told me that I should not waste my breath talking about stuff that doesn't affect our day to day lives here in Taiwan. I was flabbergasted because he was an intelligent person who went to the top university here. So I changed the subject and asked where he was applying. He said he could only go to Harvard given that he went to the best school here and I thought, "You must be kidding; you have the intellectual curiosity of a door stop!" To them, thinking is superfluous. Memorising and repeating is everything.
