Looking for advice on getting some miles while I'm there. (from the 2nd-7th of March) Will need a rental so suggestions for that would be helpful and appreciated. Looks like there's a velodrome there as well. That would be awesome. Any expats/locals that ride and live there that I can meet? Thanks!!

Don't.
The air is disgusting and the drivers are lunatics.

Thanks Bob; been there multiple times so I know about the nasty air and lunatic drivers. I've never biked there though and have seen a few roadies around.

Ok so you're up to speed.
Try searching for shops in Shaghai. That might be your best bet.

Working out on bad air days is horrible and I'm pretty sure that's how I got pneumonia in Beijing last month. You're there for 5 days, workout inside if you get jumpy, it's not worth getting sick.

^^^ Over the last few months the air quality in Beijing has been TWICE that of the top level on the pollution index. It drops down when there is a storm but it is right back up again a few days later.
China is a cesspool. Even the Chinese are pissed about it. If I never have to go there again I'd be happy.

my friend in beijing says it's not getting any better. People dying is a way to thin the population.

The last time I was there for business, I would always wake up with my nose stuffed up. Upon blowing my nose, the recreation of snot would be a dark brown/ grey. Never had that in my entire life.
Don't forget the N95 face masks either.

Rode in Laos a couple of weeks ago for 6 days straight (Luang Prabang to Vientiane.) Bad timing! It was almost like riding in China due the Chinese New Year -- the Chinese had come down in droves from the southern China provinces to vacation. The vast majority in luxury vehicles. Most of them would honk several times before passing which would make us very nervous ruining the experience of riding in a beautiful countryside. Met a German guy who had also come down from China (expat working and living there.) When I asked about riding conditions in China, he also didn't recommend it due to high pollution. He said he has to drive hours to find a decent place to ride and he would only mountain bike there. I can see now why he won't do any road riding.

A few of the guys here organise road trips into China from Hong Kong. They get clear roads and good air. Will have to look up the exact location, but not far - they get a van to drive up from the border.
