Mr. Datlas, I have a different view:

1) Can the person afford this gift? If they are of means, this may be no more than sending flowers is to a pauper. Would you accept flowers?
2) Are you an ethical person, and do you absolutely feel that this would cause you to do something unethical in support of the person?
3) Will it compromise your professional care toward him, his son, or your other patients in the future?
4) Is it a nice color that matches the balance of your kit, and would it fit on the Epic Wednesday ride?

I think the answers to this will tell you what to do. If you were a counselor or psychiatrist, I would say it is totally inappropriate. As an MD or surgeon, I have trouble seeing the compromise. Doctors take junkets paid for by drug companies, which I would think far harder to justify as compared to this.

Qualifier: I am an engineer. All a customer has ever given me is ****, which I promptly give back.

Thanks for the note:

1. Yes I think he is of decent means.
2. Yes I like to think I am ethical, but I am human and all of us are subject to subconscious or unconscious manipulation
3. As above, I would like to think not but I am well aware that ANYONE can be manipulated
4. It is gorgeous. Black with red accents. I will try to post a pic.

And RU is right, the drug companies can no longer easily take a doc on a junket. I suppose it happens sometimes under the guise of "training" or such but I have never done this and don't think I could in the future.

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

Exactly, Just like we all saw in The Fugitive. Clearly drug companies manipulate doctors into hiring one armed thugs into bludgeoning spouses of Harrison Ford. If there is no one armed man, I believe there is no crime.

Honestly, this sounds like a sincere gift. The person obviously put enough effort into it to make an intelligent purchase, that is Mr. Datlas'es size, and is one of the best regarded "endurance" bikes going. If this was simply to curry favor, wouldn't it have had DuraAce?

But in full honesty, I would have an impossible time accepting it as well.

Please post a pic. It sounds like my bike. I'm sure I'm not helping when I say it's a *wonderful* bike. But then again I'm a newb, so what do I know?

.

At the last conference I went to, a drug co set up a Crepe station making fresh crepes with nutella and banannas. If a doc's ID said NY, WI, MA, and one other state, they couldn't give the crepe to him/her because they are banned from recieving ANY benefits from Pharma or equipment companies. It is state law.

Ordered a 56cm Scott Foil 20, I'll transfer Di2 10 speed over to it, sell the Ultegra stuff, cheesy wheels, put the new D.A. 9000 crank and calipers on it. I'll wind up with a bike that's lighter, considerably stiffer. I figure it to be 300+ grams lighter anyway. Eventually I'll add another Ptap G3 on a Williams 38 rear, but for now it will be the non Ptap 38s and mostly the Zipp clinchers. It's not the weight so much that will make that bike faster, it's the stiffer BB.

Faster being a relative term when His Holiness is involved.

That Foil is a very light frame for an aero bike. 900 grams or so for the frame. Hell, the pricier HMX-net frame is listed @ 840 grams . Anything under 1000 grams on a frame is pretty friggin light. I think the S2 frame is 1150-1200 grams. Every review of those aero bikes said the Foil had the stiffest BB. The Addict sure does. You can feel it climbing, no doubt, I ride the S2/Addict back to back all the time. Addict climbs and accelerates better, you can feel it.

OK here is a picture of the gift bike. It's an iphone pic so not a great image....

p.s. that's a vintage poster of the "Tour of Somerville" circa 1985 in the corner. Somerville is a town in NJ near where I grew up. They have an annual crit on Memorial Day.

p.p.s. this is my office at work. Yes, I know it's a mess. I need not be reminded.

I would keep the platform pedals even if you return the bike.

Never mind what I said... keep the bike, it's beautiful.

If the doc/patient relationship goes bad, you can always say that you never got the bike, it must've got lost in your messy office and tossed out.

But it has a dork disc. Won't be beautiful until that's removed.
