I went on the GVBR in about 1993 (not entirely legally..counterfeit passes :D).....it was awesome.

Plenty of 3-wheelers with nothingh to do at night-time equals horny road cyclist's paradise.....

HA!! Spot on, but nowhere near as bad as Clinton Grybas on 3aw. He must be a 'born again'

Besides, a quick g'day costs nothing.

Don't get me started on snobbery!

I did my first few criteriums in 1987 with non-aero brake levers and $20 cranks with one chain-ring! :p

I raced D-grade at VFL park on a Repco Victory Tri-A in white and smoke green, wearing Netti shorts and a System U top, Cinelli leather helmet and Diadora shoes about 2 sizes too big.....circa 1988

HA! :) Looooxery!! I must've been there in 1988, although I mainly did Dunlop Road (B grade), 'coz I had to work in the gym on Tuesdee nights.

I did ALL my three years of criteriums in one of those two-toned, skin tight, Netti track tops with no pockest! (ok, that's not that bad)

I used a leather Cinelli helmet out on the road for about a year after the helmet laws first came in -- then I had a big crash, and totally changed my mind.

rockmuncher 12-12-04 08:28 PM

I raced crits in castelli bib & brace (vivid blue top) which was probably worth more than my bike! I made up for that indescretion with my adidas cycling shoes with plastic soles that another kid from school didn't need any more!

531Aussie 12-12-04 08:29 PM

I had my Eddy Merckx Adidas shoes (grey) for 18 years!!!

Yep....grey and red, laces under the velcro. Came in 1/2 sizes and lasted longer than a nuclear holocaust.

I just threw out my old red Brancales, they were about that age. Totally floppy and sagged out! like their owner :) Replaced them with cheap-***** shimano-SL's that are ten times stiffer and fit better LMAO

Brancale were a great brand....used by the greats. Lemond, Anderson, Bauer.

Still got 'em..somewhere.

Ok, I've gotta kill 5 mins while I drink this coffee, so I'm gunna reel off a few names, but you started the nostalgia by mentioning VFL park :D

Retlaw
Robby Sandagada
Barnsey
Evil
Alan Dipple
big fat Peter Ballis
Stewart Cook, from Gran Prix Cycles
the Oliver brothers
Reese, who ran Sid Patterson in East Bent for a while

Jeez....there's some blasts from the past!!! Is Barnsey Tony Barnes?? He built my first "real" racing frame in 1990.
Evil...classic character.

Yeah, I think so -- he was tallish, skinny, and kinda freckley

Yep....and had a 2 foot high pile of stick mags in the dunnies at his shop.

His brother Marcus used to race crits all padded up like a Japanese keirin racer.

Rolf Mao :roflmao:

ed073 12-12-04 09:18 PM

he he he!!!

Barnesy was a horse.....quite adept at the pursuit. And I reckon he invented the GT tiple-triangle frame design.

HA HA, that's right!!! I was there when he first got it (or at least shortly after) -- I remember every one checking it out one morning at Dunlop Road. I didn't know it was his; I thought is WAS a GT.

He was also the first guy I ever saw with an modern-day speedo. He had it on his track bike at Carnegie.

Ok, what about this "feeling sick while racing" thread on Cycling Forums?

http://www.cyclingforums.com/showthr...15#post1574215

How did you guys go eating before a race?

I could not eat anything within at LEAST 4 or 5 hours before a race, or I would almost bring it up, and I could definitely not eat anything on a Sunday morning before a 10am race......or was it 9:30?

If I ate all the stuff that this guys says, I would choke on my spew, and die -- so I'm thinking of "going" him. :p

Nah....I'm the opposite. If I was riding out to Dunlop/Glenvale racing then training afterwards, it would be a massive load-up at home, dump, shower, dress, leave. Weet-Bix, toast, coffee, juice...whatever was around. Hell Ride would be the same, but it's hard to froce feed yourself at 6am!

Refunded brekky only once at Dunlop Rd. Last half of the race I don't reckon we dropped under 50kmh....Billy-Joe Shearsby was using us as a punching bag for his World Record beating team pursuit form.

Ah, Ok, I better leave the guy alone -- it must be just me.

I used to stuff my face the night before, then get up at as late as possible

Not me!!! Serial worrier.....I'd lay out all my gear the night before, shoes, jersey, shorts, etc, etc...check the weather about 5 times, wipe the bike down before leaving.

I used to envy these blokes who could climb out of the scratcher and go like stink from the gun.

I used to eat weet-bix before racing. Damned horrible when it came back up tho. Or at least that's what the guys behind me use to say :D

One Sat night I got home so late that I slept in all my gear, including my shoes!! :p

Then: BANG!!! Alarm....straight on the bike. Nothing like riding up North Road while scooping the "muesli" out of your eyes :p
