Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Like I said, i reckon that guy seems the type to get "shirty" if you agravate him, so he might hit back with all sorts of naughty bits. Maybe we could just let his thread drift away

Hey Hitchy,

Mate, I'm an IT Sys Admin. If I can't find a back door pretty quick, there probably isn't one.
And you're right, maybe I should get a life. At least I got out for a quick 20Kms in my lunch hour

Cheers,
Dave

No worries Hitchy,
Without you guys posting all the time, I'd actually have to do some of that horrible "work" stuff.

Safe to surmise that Aussies:
1. love bike racing
2. love talking about bike racing
3. love reminiscing about bike racing (well....that's more me than anyone. )
4. love having a joke at the expense of Americans/Kiwis/Poms/Sooth Effrikans etc etc
5. do no work

like I keep saying:

Awesome!!! Seriously, if I absolutely killed meself, I might be able to do that distance in three days, but most likely four!

Can't believe all them blokes pulled out at the first climb. Who were they? Name names.

Did you get back with the main bunch after the stack?

What happened to the Irish?

What did you learn about food and drink?

G'day,

well.........the blokes that pulled out early were the sensible ones as far as I'm concerned....I'm assuming that they were D graders that had had enough. It's a different world racing against pro's...they are so far on a different level to us 'wannabes' that it's not funny. Soon as the race started it was on for 'young & old'.....the first few sprints were contested at 55-60 kph....Not much fun for the wannabes. If you didn't know what to expect, i can understand why they were in trouble...as for names...a scan of the DNF's will give you a few....many pro's pulled out too.....some cos they wanted to save the legs for the 'sun tour' this week, some who never planned to complete the race & others who just found it to hard (yes ...even pro's do!) they have a different motivation than the 'wannabes'...I mean if you're in it for a quid & it becomes clear early that you're having a bad day!!.........the stack I referred to was well after the 'selection' had taken place.....there was about 10-12 of us, well off the back of the main bunch, but mostly prepared to stick it out...when the stack happened, the whole bunch waited to see the outcome. We got the guy going again after about 3-4 minutes & carried him for the next 50km till he felt better...great effort for him to finish cos he came down real hard!..........the Irish?....who knows....they turned up when the race countdown was 1 min to go...unloading bikes, putting wheels on...etc when the gun went....the race was under control for the first 10 km (as usual)...but the pace was slower than usual...I assume to give the Irish a chance to get back 'on'...which they did.....I heard dave Macca say when they came back......"you shoulda set 2 alarms...to be sure, to be sure"...cracked everyone up!....none of the Irish finished....Waddid i learn about eating & drinking?......I read some stuff awhile ago that said at my weight (84kg)...I would need to eat between 70 & 80gms of carbs per hour. I basically worked out how long I thought each section between feed stations was gunna take....& packed food equal to that calaculation. I didn't try anything new in the eating dept...I couldn't afford for it not to work....i had been experimenting with different foods & eating on the bike during some of my long training sessions....the food side of it went brilliantly, although I found the 'snickers marathon' bars abit to sweet after awhile. the only other eating thing I learned was to break all the food up into bites size pieces & unwrap & re-bag everything into 'glad sandwich bag' type things. I didn't 'bonk' at all ...so it worked for me.....I drank 6 lts on the bike... (3 lt gatorade),it was 'adequate' but I was 'all in' at the end, so I probably coulda had more fluid....thats about it.....Oh , I also learned that I'm to old for this ***** & I love my Arione & carbon frame, which probably saved me from being wheelchair bound this week!....I also learned...& this is serious...that if you want something badly enough, are prepared to work your guts out to get it...nothings impossible...I've got a medal to prove it!,

cheers,
