Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: 2012 Motobecane Vent Noir; 2016 Mercier Kilo TT Pro

Cane Creek. I've used the sh*t out of those on several bikes and they're great.

I've got them on my CX bike because they came with them, and I haven't bothered to take them off, which will mean new brake housings.

But racing CX, I've never used them. I don't see why you'd want to brake from the tops in cross. Not the most stable position for braking and turning.

Seems more suited for commuting.

I don't race cross but when even some of the pros use them I think they have a purpose, depending on preference

Looking at the pics from Worlds in Louisville, a handful are using them. Obviously they know more about CX than I do (Cat4 in CX). I don't really understand why though.

There has some with the lever in Carbon Fiber..

they are useful with really steep drops so you can hang on without feeling like tucking for a roll over

casual riders like them too .. touring folks too

German Dieter Runkel won the Cross Worlds in the mid 90s, used a 4 cable monster bodge to make them
from current MTB and road levers .. bikies think the gear was why fast riders win, that is a Given.

then the CNC folks took over the idea. now the production is over 'there' and not Europe.

I never got a pair, but I wanted them for this reason - to have the ability to stop while being able to sit up and see over the tops of cars just a little better. I don't commute by bike anymore, but I just learned to live without them, anyway.

Bikes: See my sig...

I have a set on my XC bike which is fitted with drops... it gives a better position for descents on more technical terrain and are also nice in traffic when you want to sit up and still want to have the brakes at hand.

I run Tektros... plan to install a few more sets on my own bikes and on my daughters road bike as she is still getting comfortable with drops.

My daughter crashed using them on a hill descent in Seattle. She had them maxed out and she kept accelerating. Next time I get my hands on her bike - off they go - housing cost be damned! Nice road rash - not too deep, enough to keep her scared to use them.

How about just setting up the brakes correctly so they work.

How about telling her not to descend on her tops to start with?

Tektro RL570 or RL726 or 721.

I run the RL570's on my bike. THey are probably on the cheaper end but still a decent lever. While I don't use them often for full on braking, I find that they are nice for trim braking. If I am riding with my hands on top of the bars and need to slow down gradually, I can easily hit the cross levers with my thumbs to slow me down slightly.

Adjusted correctly, they will stop the bike on a dime.
