Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Boyd Wheels!

I crashed on a road ride a couple of weeks ago, which taco'd my front wheel. I decided it was a good time for an upgrade since I had to buy one wheel anyways. From Mavic Ksyrium Equipe to Boyd Vitesse. I just received the Boyd's yesterday, installed new GP4000s tires and new brake pads, and mounted on bike. So far just a quick spin around the neighborhood, but hope to have a decent ride tomorrow. Here they are along with the old front wheel.

Well look at that. Specialized once did know how to build frame that wasn't awful looking.

Nice wheels, too. Did you get the new 11sp hub?

I actually am starting to like the new Specialized frames! I would buy a Roubaix SL4 if I could afford it. No I didn't get the 11sp hub...I just got the new Red group last year, and I figure to use it for at least a couple or three more years.

And these are the new 2013 design? Wider rims and better hubs? $650? Been looking at it for a few weeks now.

The Vitesse already had a wider rim, but is now available with an 11sp hub. I'm not a fan of 11sp, but Boyd and others have to keep up and I like the way they integrated it into their line up.

Specialized can make their frames look any way they want, and with the newer Roubaix they chose to make them look like barf and poopy.

lolz.

I'm definitely on the trajectory of Boyds as my next wheelset.

Please post back with your ride impressions, OP!

I have Boyd's Vitesse wheelset on my commuter. Got them last June and have over 10k miles on them. I run GP4000s on them and still running straight and true a year later. Nice wheels. You'll enjoy them.

Actually, the older hubs have an 11 speed freehub body that can be added. With the new hubs it's a completely new design and one that is unique to our wheels. The pawls have been changed to 4 oversized pawls for very solid engagement. The NDS bearings was also moved out to the edge of the hub and a pre-load was added. Sharp got the 10sp version which has better right flange dimensions, and we decided to make both a 10 speed version and an 11 speed conversion kit (with a 131mm axle) so that we are not penalizing people who are running 10 speed by making them run a big spacer behind their cassette.

Also, Sharp. . .you gave me quite a scare first thing this morning when I saw the thread, opened it up, and the first thing I saw was a tacoed wheel! But then I read through and saw that was the previous wheels you had. Glad you're ok.

Good to hear for people upgrading that they can still use their older Boyd's. But being a shimano/SRAM user, I typically avoided rear hubs that had campy compatible flange spacing. I believe decent wheels can be built that way, but don't see any good reason not to take advantage of the higher NDS tension that was possible with 'shimano spaced' hubs. Obviously 11sp takes that advantage away for the most part. The extra mm you added to the OLD may seem small, but it makes sense to me.

But I'm personally going to avoid 11sp in hopes that 135mm spacing, 12sp and road disc all become common at the same time.

Man that sure would suck to wreck a brand new wheelset! BTW thank you for the new wheelset and great speedy service! I think I have 4 rides on them in the last couple of weeks....they ride great! Coach, how much PSI do you recommend with these wider rims and 25mm tires?
