I tend to nod, and say thanks for pedestrians on a MUP that are friendly and gave room.
But I still suck and usually aren't at a conversational pace, so any acknowledgement wouldn't be huge movements.

That's pretty much my conclusion. Of course that lumps everyone as either a Fred or a poseur. I'll gladly admit that I'm the former.

Will a Cannondale rider wave to a Cervelo rider? A SRAM to a Shimano?
I used to ride a motorcycle (Yamaha) and the Harley guys acted like you didn't exist.
I give most people a gentle nod, slight raising of a finger or two, of if she's hot a full head turn.

I'll admit I'm only about 20% on the friendly cyclist waves but I make a special point of waving to the park workers on the Alpharetta Greenway, who do an outstanding job keeping it clear. It paid off this morning when they were stopping bike and foot traffic for a utility repair but I got waved right on through.
It all comes back around eventually.

Around here,
Lotsa waves on side streets, with people out trying to ride because their doctor told them to exercise or die, Freds like me, or sightseers.
No waves from commuters or racer-types and wanna be's, I suspect they are too wrapped up and concentrating on traffic, pulse rate, cadence, that stuff. And I do not blame them.

Was out for my morning ride, 30-40mph winds at times, no cyclists out but me, so I waved at all the animals I saw.
Forget cyclists the REAL problem is all those High Horse, Ivory Tower Elitist animals that didn't wave back.
That's MY complaint, they just ran the other way or flat out ignored me...
I am so upset

Sometimes I wave. Sometimes I don't. If I do wave and it's not returned, I try not to take it personally.

When I owned a Triumph TR-7 and passed another TR-7 or -8 during the day, I would make my lights flip up & down as a "wave".
Of course with a Triumph, that was both a sign of friendliness and showing off because the headlight motor on most of those burnt out after about four years.
I am generally a friendly kind of person so tend to do the finger wave or head nod. But not always. And I usually don't notice or care if the other cyclist returns the gesture.

Oh, I see, you're one of those super judgmental types? Hmm, what's worse, the non-waver, or the person who judges everyone based on their non-waving and/or appearance and gear? Couldn't possibly be that someone who is "kitted out" and doesn't wave, is *actually* concentrating, or doesn't feel it necessary to acknowledge every person they come across?

Judging someone as judgemental is judgemental, non?
