Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: 2023 Canyon Aeoroad CF SL, 2015 Trek Emonda SLR, 2002 Litespeed Classic, 2005 Bianchi Pista, Some BikesDirect MTB I never ride.

Except I based my judgment on a comment made specifically about non wavers. I'm not lumping every non-waver who looks "pro" into the typical "racer boy/wannabe" category, as was specifically stated. The whole point is who cares? Why some people get so butthurt over not being waved to is ludicrous. Notice, I said "some", based on "some" people's comments. HUZZAH!

You can be judgmental as long as you don't say you're not judgmental. I'm judgmental as hell. Your post is also judgmental.

You guys all need to ride more, post less. I'd take my own advice but I can't for another few weeks.

You have to be careful being friendly to bike riders. I was in my truck earlier today and gave a friendly honk to a smug looking cyclist. Now i am taking heat from my plant manager and taking a driver safety training course.*

You seem highly offended.

This is a forum where a sense of humor is a very useful thing to have. It gets boring talking about headtube angles and bar tape colors after a while, so people crack jokes in here, it's all in good fun. Use some Assos for your butthurt, and then stop taking this place so seriously.

I'll race you on strava, we'll see who can fudge the highest average speed.

It really is pathetic for a fellow roadie not to wave back, verbal greeting, or at least a head nod when he/she clearly knows that hes/she has been waved at by another cyclist. Life it too short to behave otherwise; some of you much younger than 50 will realize that later in life, hopefully not too later.
It's really nothing to do with age. I'm pushing sixty, and in my view it is the waving that is pathetic. I don't know you, the fact that we are both on bikes does not make us soulmates, I really couldn't give a **** for your acknowledgement and am not so needy as to desire your recognition of the fact that I can stay upright on two wheels. So wave away, and I'll get on with my ride, thanks.

Woah!I was a cop for 24 years..Im definitely not TOO SENSITIVE.Im just trying to acknowledge other riders dedication to the sport in desolate areas,If a person can't raise a finger to acknowledge I don't give a rats ass.Like I said I'm a lone rider with manners

I wave or nod to people who look and act like roadies (which includes many mounties while on pavement). Sometimes they respond, sometimes not. Sometimes they wave or nod first. Doesn't terribly matter.

The definition of roadie is admittedly vague.

I'm all to aware how very different we all are. I actually think it's great (what if we were all modeled after 1 person and wouldn't that be horrible if we were). You couldn't be any more distant from your hyperbolic assertion of what you believe those who wave are seeking, unless those assertions are driven by insecurities. If you truly believe that 1 waving cyclist passing you in the opposite direction, on a quiet, empty country road is in fact pathetic, then I think that that is just sad. It would be your opinion, and I'm very ok with that, really. We can't possibly have a world where everyone shares the same POV -just not possible. Nevertheless, what I said is my opinion. Please don't confuse a friendly head-nod or wave with some lost cyclist in search of a soulmate, or maybe some desire to be warm and fuzzy just because we ride bikes. And, if you don't wave back you must know that we are just as we'll, happily getting on with our rides too, trust me on that one. Thank YOU.

I say hi and wave to every cyclist over the age of 12 or so. That meant maybe 6 people 3 years ago, one person last year and one so far this year. Most of the car drivers I see also wave. I can certainly see less waving when the population density is higher, but it sounds like a number of folks take pride in being rude.

When visiting my sister and brother-in-law in Albuquerque, we always ride our bikes on the Paseo del Bosque Trail (MUP) and riders we see on the trail nearly always nod or give a finger wave (no, not the middle one!). I've always thought of ABQ as a friendly town on or off the bike.

Thanks for the compliment for my city,we need more visitors like you but I've lived and worked her all of my life and this is not considered a "bike friendly community" so I stick to that trail a lot but. I'm not seeing the friendliness,IMO

That it really doesn't matter? Wave, don't wave, shave, don't shave ... whatever floats your boat.

Although I don't agree with your sentiment, that is pretty epic.

People are inherently stupid and simple, and it's kind of dik to just mock people for being average. Striving for the next level type shet. That's why we rep things like Punch Out and Metroid so hard. Although I'm like a super pro rad racer cat 1 in certain things, it is definitely not cycling, and I'm just a Fred in this world.

Of course with a Triumph, that was both a sign of friendliness and showing off because the headlight motor on most of those burnt out after about four years.
Oh boy! We own a Mitsubishi Delica, a four-wheel-drive van. They aren't that common on our roads.

But it sure amuses me as 90% of the Delica drivers wave as they go past. I checked out the Delica forum, and found most of the owners are a bunch of idiots. And nope, no threads on why other Delica drivers won't wave back.

I tried to get a bit of Bike Forums attitude going in there once, and got threatened with a ban with a long and stern PM from the mod. Jerks!

Yeah, I know, I'll wave at other cyclists, but not Delica drivers. That's just the way it is...

I used to be a waver but today I saw the most ungodly freds waving at me. They all had mirrors and dorky smirks like they just saw a long lost relative or something. No, it was just me they saw and, believe me, seeing me is not that exciting, but they waved with such enthusiasm I felt compelled to ignore them and hope no one associated me wth them.

I used to live in ABQ and I think cyclists are just too afraid of the drivers to take their attention off of them to wave at you...

I wave, but as said much earlier, with a lifted finger off the bars or simple nod.
