Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rain Wear For Fun Rides?

What do you recommend for rain wear (jacket, pants) that are light and form fitting enough for a fast weekend training ride on wet, chilly days. It'll soon be too cold to simply ride wet in summer jersey and shorts. Like 40-45F and raining.

I don't need to be able to put it on and remove it while riding. Ideally the pants would stuff into a jersey pocket, on the off chance that the sun comes out. Ventilation would be very nice.

I commute in rain gear, but that is loose, bulky stuff meant to fit over regular clothes. On Sundays I don't want to feel like I'm going to work.

i live in portland too. up top, i wear a longsleeve base layer or jersey, a showers pass cycling jacket and softshell vest thats pretty slim cut. lower half i wear tights and these https://www.westernbikeworks.com/prod...FasRMwodBxIAoQ. which are awesome!! a nice change of pace from 3/4 lycra knickers. im seeing more and more softshell fabric which seems to be the go to fabric for weather like ours. a waterproof cycling cap under the helmet work well too. i see some people with stretchy skull caps too. for gloves, ive got two options, full length insulated riding gloves from rei and my own bike hack, form fitting mechanics gloves like these(https://www.amazon.com/ATLAS-Black-Wo.../dp/B0012NVRS8) underneath fingerless riding gloves. makes a great combo for wet weather. grip is excellent and you can even pick small objects up. and dont forget lights and fenders! good luck.

My favourite piece of kit in wet conditions is the Castelli Gabba, not too bulky, but enough water and wind protection.
Comes in long , short sleeves, and zip off sleeves. The short sleeve goes well with the nanoflex arm warmers and they also use the same material in a vest called the Castelli Fawsome.

I have a Shower's Pass Elite rain jacket, too. It keeps me warm in the cold mornings and dry when it rains. I've just bought a pair of Novara Headwind cycling pants another forum member highly recommended. They are pretty comfortable. (I'm thinking about buying another pair.) A pair of Pearl Izumi "Cyclone Gel" gloves and Sugoi "Resistor" rain boots complete my list.

Castelli stuff is great but very expensive and they are an extreme race fit, so you will need to size up.

I found with most fully waterproof jackets that I overheated pretty quickly, so that how I found the Gabba, if you wear something like a long sleeve baselayer underneath (e.g gore thermal shirt), I don't think you'll get any better cold and rain protection. especially if you want a minimalist race fit.

This castelli vest is great for light rain, and it's so lightweight that it easily folds up into your jersey pocket if becomes unnecessary.

I went to Universal Cycle and tried on a bunch of jackets . I'm leaning toward a Castelli Gabba long sleeve jersey and/or a Castelli Confronto rain jacket. The sizing is weird , I fit a M Confronto but need a L Gabba. Pearl Izumi also had some very nice stuff. The other jackets I looked at were more "commuter cut" sizing.

Now, anyone know if someone makes waterproof, somewhat warm, tight fitting pants/ tights?

I have two pairs of Novara Headwind bike pants. They are only water-resistant (not waterproof) but pretty warm. They fit fairly tight, too.
