Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It has been pouring with rain. About 3.00am, it was exceptionally heavy. There is flooding all up and down the East Coast of the island. Fortunately, the drainage around the place where we live has been excellent.

Job opportunities for me are starting to surface. Two in tour guiding (which are casual jobs), and one back full-time permanent in orchards, but paying much better than I was getting before. I might be in harness again before Christmas, and it can't be soon enough. I think I would go for the orchard job. It's on an island just south of Hobart, but the ferry service is regular and reliable.

More finger-crossing.

What's growing in the orchards these days?

I didn't get any riding in today. I went to my mom's house and did several loads of laundry and dishes and took the bathtub drain apart and pulled the nasty hair clog out so the water goes right down. But my new pedals came in the shipment today, I've got the loaner jersey from LoP, and one way or another... I'm riding tomorrow.

Hobart is the major city of the island state of Tasmania, off the south-eastern corner of the Australian continent.

This one is a cherry orchard.

There's a lot of stuff still grown commercially in orchards -- pome fruits (apples, pears), stone fruits (plums, cherries), stuff such as olive, and oddballs such as elderberries.

High-density plantings are the way these days.

For me, it's quite interesting work, outdoors and I am always fascinated by the change in the trees as the seasons cycle through.

So, theoretically, we could buy olive oil made from olives grown in Tasmania? How does it compare to Italian or Spanish oils?

Well it finally happened. High noon on a warmer day, jersey unzipped half way and a bee flies in and you can guess the rest from then on. No it didn't give me any honey.

Theoretically.

I don't know much about olives, to be honest. But the locally grown stuff is quite a bit more expensive than the imported stuff from Italy and Spain (which comes into the country in bulk, so it's dirt cheap).

I should buy a bottle of it and try it for dressings and cooking.

A lot of the cherries you get there come from South America, Chile likely. It's such a big business that they have such huge orchards that traffic lights are used on the junction of the roads/tracks. I heard a story once that a grower's shipment arrived on the docks after the ship had departed for the US, but the consignment was so big and so valuable, that he bore the cost of having the ship turn around and return to port for loading.
'
Christmas is cherry time here. Picking of the early varieties starts mid-December. The later ones see picking go through to February. It's risky business though -- one shower of rain can cause all the fruit in a ready-to-pick crop to split the skins and become worthless.
