Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I remember when the first KKs opened up in the NW Twin Cities - the line to get in the parking lot backed up on to the freeway.

KK/DD have their place, but local bakeries are a good thing... well, provided that they're actually good. I was glad to see that Minneapolis has a growing bakery scene - there are a couple of stellar pastry shops near me, but I still haven't found a great doughnut boutique. I hear that Glam Doll is pretty good, but haven't found myself in the neighborhood (contrary to popular belief, I don't make dedicated trips to doughnut shops).

Oh man sbxx. Hang in there pal. That's a rough scenario indeed.

All you can do when you get dealt hands like this is stay calm, take it one day at a time, and try to do some things that make you feel better or help distract you.

Serenity prayer: Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, to change the things I can and to know the difference. Some days I chant that to myself like a mantra, and some days it helps. Some days not so much.

A day at a time. Look, I've been sober for 18 years, and in AA that whole time. The thing about AA (which doesn't work for everybody to be sure) is the combination of a Judeo Christian spirituality (which turns some people off and makes AA a target for criticism) with this clear Zen-like philosophy (i.e., the only way you can win with addiction is to surrender to the fact that you're helpless over the addictive substance). That works for me, if you think that's bull****, I get that point of view as well.

Anonymity is part of AA, but I've been at this for a long time, I am what I am, if that doesn't work for you, just add that to the 99.9999% of life that's beyond my control. I try to focus on the .0001% that I can do something about.

Also, when in doubt, go for a bike ride.

But I did not do that today. Oh well. Nobody's perfect, least of all the Pope.

There are no Dunkin Donuts shops in the San Francisco Bay Area so I have no idea how good or bad they are. Their ads are on TV all the time though for their coffee. I am still bitter that Starbucks ditched the Top Pot hand-forged donuts Apple Fritters when they replaced the pastries with the terrible Boulange brand that they bought last year.

Krispy Kreme are simply bad donuts. I don't get what the fuss is/was all about and I definitely have a sweet tooth.

Dunkin' Donuts just committed to opening some stores in Minneapolis; finally! Every time my wife and I go to down to Chicago we stop there. They are by no means the best donuts out there, but lots of options and just a solid doughnut.

If they were simply bad, they wouldn't be so successful - it all depends on what you like in a doughnut. If you like more cake-y doughnuts, no, KK will not be for you as they're at the other end of the spectrum. If you do like really light, warm-from-the-fryer doughnuts, then there aren't too many better options available to most people.

Stop. Next you'll be saying that frame material selection is a matter of preference and intended use.

Most of the local bakeries are small town family-owned places that have been around forever and not exactly "artisanal". For old fashioned big, greasy glazed, a place like Otto's in Byron is hard to beat. There's a more fancy-pants bakery in Rochester called Daube's. It's next door to the bike shop.

Come now - everyone knows that, aside from the occasional aspolsion, crabon is the finest material out there.

I have to be calm and positive because my wife needs me. And my three year old. And my clients who have a host of their own problems.

Riding my bike is the escape, as was the last year of handwringing over the new bike. It might seem silly to spend time pondering the weight of a seat post collar, but when the walls are coming down around you, it's a mindless distraction from life. Weighing bike parts sometimes has nothing to do with the weight of the bike parts.

Tough to hear, sbxx. Sometimes positive thoughts is all a person can send, but that never hurts.

I've asked for the gene. Not literally, but the sentence that comes with it. I can handle it.

We'll see in two weeks.

More positive thoughts for both of you from here too.

I hated what my mom went through, but in a way, the prolonged illness did a lot to help my dad prep for living alone. She was able to teach him how to take care of himself. He'd never done laundry or cleaned the house before, and wasn't much of a cook. It was in a tiny way a positive thing... but ****, I do not want to linger and fade that way. No ****ing way.

I hope your wife is clear sb. Fingers crossed and all that.

I'm still not sure if it's better to know or not, but I'm leaning towards it's better to know. Is the test definitive? (To a point, I'm sure nothing is 100% but I'm hesitating on getting the genetic test for ovarian cancer because that one is still so iffy anyway.)

We have warm-from-the-fryer doughnuts here at the rjones28 homestead occasionally.

Oh my.

You know, Syracuse is not that far away you know. Just a little ride on 17 and a little ride on 81 and BAM, you're there!

Her test will be definitive. She either has the gene or she doesn't. If she has it, 90% chance it will kill her.

We spent a lot of time talking about the test. The decision to get tested came down to: if she didn't find out, she would spend the rest of her life assuming she had the disease. If she was tested and didn't have it, she could walk away. She waited until she was ready, and then got tested earlier this month.
