Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The first concert I went to under my own power was U.K. at Penn's Landing in Philly circa 1978.

The good news is a store has been found for me to train at in whatever. More good news is that for the next two weeks, starting Monday, I will be working 40 hours a week and will have both weekend days off. The bad news is the store where I will be training is 45 minutes to an hour away. And the worst news of all is that the eight hour days I'll be working are going to start at 7am and I like to get there 15 to 20 minutes early. I'm not trying to be a baby about this and I'm happy that the check resulting from those two weeks will be around $900 before taxes. Still, take a moment to let the numbers sink in. Arrive by 6:45 after an hour of driving means leaving the house at 5:45 and allowing a half hour to get ready and on the road means waking up at 5:15 and that means if I want eight hours of sleep and time for whoopee then bedtime is 8:45. And believe me when I say those last two are very necessary; you don't want a sleep deprived and cranky person handling the firearms, do you?

@3alarmer would have appreciated today's CBL (computer based learning) module on "Labor Relations". One highlight was when the VO guy said something like "Associates are not prohibited from discussing unions during working hours. In fact, they can talk with their peers about whatever topic they choose. This right is protected by Federal law." Damn straight. In a little thing called the Constitution in the amendment right before the one people get so het up about. Good to know we won't be violating the Bill of Rights or anything. That being said, people talking about unions or griping about their pay or benefits may be warning signs someone is considering joining a union or attempting to bring one in and these should be reported to a "salaried member of management" right away. So, you have the right and you're free to exercise that right but, if you do, you should also anticipate being snitched off for it. Except you didn't see this module so you won't know that's what's happening until afterwards.

And, yes, I do think a businessperson has a right to know if someone may be making plans to disrupt or otherwise interfere with his livelihood. I just wish that didn't include tattling on people who think they're doing what's best for them, their family, and their co-workers.

If it makes you feel any better, I need to be at work by 8:15 most days, 7:15 if I have an early meeting, am teaching rounds or have journal club, the early days are once a week minimum, most weeks twice a week.

To get to work on a normal 8:15 day, I leave my house at 7:10. My day does not have a set finish time, it's over whenever I'm done. If I want to be sure to get whatever weekday workout done, it has to be done in the AM because I never know when I'll get out of work. So I'm up at 4:50am to be to the gym or yoga by 5:30 or on my bike by 5:15. Done by 6:30, home & in the shower by 6:40.

To get to work on an "early" 7:15 day, I leave at 6:15. So I get to sleep in those days, until 5:15 am. But no workout or ride is possible those days.

Bedtime is 9pm for me.

This is all mitigated somewhat by a 4 day work week. And the fact that I usually ride a train to work, so I actually get a little "me" time during the commute.

..ratting people out is also Constitutionally protected. Just do your job and try not to get
too upset about this stuff. I did the union rep thing for the feds for a couple of years, and I
think I might even have saved a person or two from dismissal, but at some personal cost.

The biggest deal I ever got done was a non-smoking policy for the Merced, CA office, and
given the way things turned out, it obviously woulda happened anyway after a few years.

Like that trombone player in "Treme' " is always saying, "Play for that money, boys."

I didn't get Harvard, but I did get NDSU over Oklahoma. Right now, Harvard is my only miss. That was my best first day of brackets ever. I'm in a 3 way tie for first in my group. However, we're all from Michigan (most went to MSU) so about 95% of us have MSU winning it all. Things could get ugly in the end.

They were one of my favorites back in the day, unfortunately, they didn't do much after the double album. They should have just quit while they were ahead. Now Billy is just an embarrassment to his former self.
