Unfortunately, Wendy the dog worsened over night. We spent two hours with her this morning, and ended up putting her down. I have no doubt that it was the right decision for her, but that makes it no less crappy.
I am rerouting my bike trip to hit the spot where I always stopped on hiking trips to play in a brook with her. Seems like a good spot to say goodbye again.

On a positive note. I rode my fastest century today and I'm on a huge adrenaline rush right now!

I bought a black Fender acoustic guitar from Exeter Music when I was 14. $199 on sale.
I restrung it with light gauge strings and wrote an inscription with silver paint marker. Gave it to my wife yesterday. Language and a new instrument for brain health. Italian and guitar.

Had a breakthrough ride on the P3 today. Long, straight road with wide shoulders and finally got to the point where I was comfortable in aero on the way back. Love that bike.
Even made me forget about the flat at the very start.

My dog was vomiting repeatedly this morning, so my son called me. By the time I got home, she was lying still, wouldn't stand, wouldn't pick up her head. I took her to the vet hospital, which is where she is now. Xrays show massively distended belly, empty intestines, enlarged liver. Blood work shows infection, among other liver and kidney issues. She will get a night of antibiotics and fluids, and we will see what's what tomorrow morning.
And at noon tomorrow, 16 friends will descend on my house for our 7th annual St. Patsgiving, our annual celebration of meat and beer. Followed by an enebriated 3 mile run (tradition).
I am not in the right mood for this ****.

I raced around a stock car track today. Not the best venue for me, but the novelty was pretty cool. Much like a restrictor plate race the field stayed pretty much glued together and rubbin' was racin' at the end. I got pinned up against the wall and missed my lead out for a team mate. Bummer.

i just spent a few hours plotting a route for my trip that now seems overly ambitious. i'm trying to fit a lot of stuff in. that may be unwise... but 300-400 miles a day on a motorbike really isn't that bad. i'm just not sure i can keep that up for 6 days or if i should cut the route shorter and stay in one place an extra day. i may have to skip arizona and the four corners, unfortunately, and just cut straight across instead of going so far south. however that would allow me to get to lehman caves.

Casually Deliberate
We had a young volunteer in the shop today and had to put new tubes in four tires and new tubes and tires on a set of wheels. I got out my Pedros and he said "You have your own tire levers?" "Yep." "And they're pink. That's pretty cool." "Yep. I always get them back." So we tried a new technique for tire removal that I had not been taught but had read about recently in Robert Hurst's book "The Art of Cycling": slide the first tire lever under one bead of the tire then hook the other end of the lever onto the spoke. This makes life easier because as you're unzipping the tire with the other lever, the first one doesn't fall out onto the floor. It's a small thing but a nice thing.
I got one bead of the new tire on the rim and started putting the second side on and the volunteer says "Don't you want levers to do that?" I said "Never use tools to put tires on if you can help it. It's a good way to pinch the tube. Just do it with your hands." He watches me, tire levers at the ready. Then *thwop* the last of the bead pops into place and he says "Niiiice". Some people are just easily impressed. He should see me do it with brand new road tires sometime.

if you happen to run out of gas (figuratively) in the vicinity are swell places to spend the night.
