Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As well, the one time all day he went out to the bathroom I had to help him to his feet before he could get up. His eyes were really sunken in to the back of his head and I knew that was a bad sign. Sunday night he made no attempt to come upstairs with us at bedtime and stayed downstairs overnight. He never ate all day.

Yesterday, again he ate nothing all day, neither did he drink anything all day or go to the bathroom all day, and his eyes were filling with mucous, and I knew deep down it was time to let him go. I started to call the vet yesterday but figured I’d give him one last opportunity to pull another miracle out of his hat. He slept most of the day, feebly lifting his head to look at me occasionally, and periodically shifting position, but he never got to his feet. He couldn’t. Last night when he couldn’t get to his feet even as I tried to lift him, I knew it was time to let him go.

This morning my wife and I carried him to the car and took him to the vet and we lovingly said good bye to my loyal best friend and companion and sent him home to be with Star, the only other dog he ever befriended in his life. He was a tough and courageous dog to the very end.

This thread has had three recent canine family pass away lately, hopefully this will be the last for awhile.

Just read this. I feel the pain in your words. I'm truely sorry Billy.

Right Behind

I was walking my pup Cody near the top of our big hill
And he pulled real hard against the line like a young dog always will
When I heard a sound familar and it took me by surprise
I turned around and saw my old dog Sammy comin right behind

Well Sammy died too early, it hit us pretty hard
And we’re surely glad that now we have a young dog runnin in the yard
But we miss Sam just as badly and we cry most every day
I hear thats how these things they always go at least thats what they say

Well maybe I should let it go, our grief will heal with time
But when I walk I’ll always know my Sammy he’s comin right behind

Cody’s getting older now, he’s more like Sammy every day
As time goes by I know I’ll come to love him in a Cody sort of way
But I’ll always hold my Sammy in a place close to my heart
Seems to me that long as I can keep him there we’ll never be apart

Well I guess that I should let it go, our grief will heal with time
But when I walk I’ll always know my Sammy he’s comin right behind
The loves we lose are really how our lives they are defined
When I walk I’ll always know my Sammy he’s comin right behind
He’s comin right behind He’s comin right behind

Well written PCAD.

An inauspicious start to the 2014 rjones28 riding season, but it was fun anyway. Rode the mountain bike and I pretty much remember how it all works.

Had to change my plan twice - 1) late start meant less time before PM commitment; 2) forgot to bring water.

Corgis are nice dogs but they get an untreatable late-onset genetic disease called degenerative myelopathy. This disease is particularly heartbreaking, it causes a slow loss of spinal function in the hind legs. I would not myself get a corgi for this reason, even though overall in the breed it is uncommon.

Dunkin Donuts puts "crack" in their donuts and coffee.
The donuts I can resist, but the coffee, not so much (read, Great One black, or large Iced just sugar)
America (gets the) runs on Dunkins

Booked my second paying gig ever today for June 20. Soon I'll need a road manager, a Gulfstream V, and a limo. In the meantime I'll settle for new guitar strings.

Also playing this Friday and Saturday and my friends' gigs. Trying to get local musician traction takes time. But I do it for fun and to hang out with my friends. Once I start playing out at these paid gigs they'll be paying me to do what I would do for fun anyway. That's doesn't suck.

I did ride my road bicycle 19 of the last 20 days. Mostly 25-35 mile rides, one longer 47 miler in there. Hopefully I can start stretching out the rides as the weather gets milder. Foil needs a BB repacking or replacement. Again. Just replaced the chain and cluster.

...somewhere down the road there's gonna be a choice to be made between biking and trashing hotel rooms. Just sayin'.

I just want to thank everyone for your kind words and sympathies. Thanks for the poem, Pcad. Time eventually will heal the hurt and fill the void.

I hear you. I'm comforted by the faith that now Moose has reunited with Star on the other side.

That's Star on the right, Moose on the left. She passed from a heart attack in 2009 and Moose was virtually distraught at her loss.

Need to get some 3d violet bar plugs and chainring bolts. Will take some time to fret about bar tape colour, of course. Probably gonna ditch the cranks for the Record cranks on the Park Pre.

Strip the frame and have it clear powder coated! it is almost as indestructible as the material its made of.
