Lol, I don't care what it weighs or how fast I go. I only care how long I can keep pedaling continuously uphill. You need to be able to pull up on the pedal, not just push down. Don't be such a Luddite @3alarmer. Modern times won't hurt you any. Plus it will impress all the hipster girls down at the Bike Kitchen.
If you were really into training and suffering, you'd be looking for an old Schwinn, like jonesy's. Guads like redwood trunks on one of those babies.

..."appropriate" when referencing technology, addresses more than weight and speed. In any meaningful assessment, it has to include product life span,
serviceability, continuing availability of replacement parts, manufacturer support of the product.............I think you see where this is going.

I don't get the ceramic bearing thing either, but I do appreciate framesets not made out of soft rotted wood.

...there's more to energy transfer than clipless versus toe clips, and the smoothness and efficiency of your
pedal stroke cycle has a lot to do with it. Regardless, the bionic knee is why i never much liked the first
couple of generations of clipless, because I can get more float with an old school road pedal...a plus in my case.
But this will quickly turn into another pointless exercise in debate with true believers. #trust_me

Plus it would be nice to believe that I have a super-smooth and efficient pedal stroke, and that the pedals themselves play no role.

...I can pull up fine with clips, thank you very much miss. I am as a hipster deity already. I don' need no steenkin' clipless pedals.

I was thrilled to bits when clipless came out. The Cyclebinding brand I had, just made so much sense. Too bad they were unable to fix their shoe issue.

They came on either my Schwinn or my dad's Fuji, I forget which, a long time ago.

Always check to make sure you have the battery installed before leaving for the races. I was lucky to catch that, and now leave a reminder to grab the battery from the charger, though I still may buy a spare. Magic or not, it still needs a battery to shift.

But someone with natural, smooth, circular pedal stroke that maximizes power transfer throughout the full cycle will always do better than someone who does not.
And this applies in spite of whatever pedals you happen to be using. There is as much play in your average cycling shoe as there is in a properly
adjusted pedal clip when the strap has been tightened.........your bike is magic, but your pedals much less so.

...they play a role. you have five contact points with the bike, and they are two of them.

My feet used to go numb with the toe clips. I'd totally buy though that they weren't adjusted properly, nothing was adjusted properly when I got my first bike. It's a semi-miracle that I ever liked cycling, really.

Shoes are a whole nuther subject. The hotfoot issue is one that can bring me to my knees. I considered going custom, but the races don't last long enough to need them.

This is one of the most well-read forums around . . . everybody's an expert. They join the forums for two months, read a dozen threads, a few magazines, and all of a sudden they're an expert.

Don't feel inferior, that's the same with all the other cycling pseudo-experts on this forum.

Thing is, if you're not racing or on a group ride, who gives a eff!? If I'm out just leisurely riding, who cares how efficient I am? If you get tired, stop for a rest, or turn around and go home. If you're out training or getting a workout, then a little extra work is to your benefit.
