Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you were really into training and suffering, you'd be looking for an old Schwinn, like jonesy's. Guads like redwood trunks on one of those babies.

I don't get the ceramic bearing thing either, but I do appreciate framesets not made out of soft rotted wood.

But this will quickly turn into another pointless exercise in debate with true believers. #trust_me
Lol, ok, I will drop it. I'm a newby and only know what I read anyway.

Plus it would be nice to believe that I have a super-smooth and efficient pedal stroke, and that the pedals themselves play no role.

I'm not in the slightest into suffering. Cycling Best Friend was telling me how he likes his rides to be difficult, he likes to suffer. Really? I want everything to be easy. Hence the training & preparation.

I was thrilled to bits when clipless came out. The Cyclebinding brand I had, just made so much sense. Too bad they were unable to fix their shoe issue.

They came on either my Schwinn or my dad's Fuji, I forget which, a long time ago.

Always check to make sure you have the battery installed before leaving for the races. I was lucky to catch that, and now leave a reminder to grab the battery from the charger, though I still may buy a spare. Magic or not, it still needs a battery to shift.

...they play a role. you have five contact points with the bike, and they are two of them.

But someone with natural, smooth, circular pedal stroke that maximizes power transfer throughout the full cycle will always do better than someone who does not.

And this applies in spite of whatever pedals you happen to be using. There is as much play in your average cycling shoe as there is in a properly
adjusted pedal clip when the strap has been tightened.........your bike is magic, but your pedals much less so.

Ive never mentioned it before, but I really like my shoes. I think I might have magic shoes, too. But still no seat post, can you believe that?!

My feet used to go numb with the toe clips. I'd totally buy though that they weren't adjusted properly, nothing was adjusted properly when I got my first bike. It's a semi-miracle that I ever liked cycling, really.

Shoes are a whole nuther subject. The hotfoot issue is one that can bring me to my knees. I considered going custom, but the races don't last long enough to need them.

Don't feel inferior, that's the same with all the other cycling pseudo-experts on this forum.

This is one of the most well-read forums around . . . everybody's an expert. They join the forums for two months, read a dozen threads, a few magazines, and all of a sudden they're an expert.

Yeah, some of us are slow learners. That's why I've been here more than a decade... still learning.

Thing is, if you're not racing or on a group ride, who gives a eff!? If I'm out just leisurely riding, who cares how efficient I am? If you get tired, stop for a rest, or turn around and go home. If you're out training or getting a workout, then a little extra work is to your benefit.
