Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm contemplating becoming a flamboyant, militant waver. Full 12% drag wave starting a hundred yards away from oncoming cyclist...if I dont get a wave turn around and sprint after them waving again and screaming "hello!!!!!" in a super friendly, high pitched voice.

This thread illustrates why Southerners like the OP and myself are such strong riders.

We are friendly folk and don't mind the extra work it takes to wave. It's just the right thing to do and the aerodynamic drag makes the workout that much better.

Smiling too. I'm sure someone will do a study to confirm what Southern folk already know, that the extra drag caused by our cheeks billowing in the wind as we smile is worth the effort.

People in the big northern cities are just not friendly and that's why they are poorly conditioned, weak riders. Being alone in the car all winter does make them skilled motor vehicle operators however.

If you're polite you'll always return a weave, even when in the last 30 meters of an all out sprint.

Sheesh! Weaving is dangerous! Ride predictably and don't endanger others.

Weave, weave, weave, but don't weave for the sake of weaving.

So, I'm no longer waving to anyone.

As a tub of fat I need all the watts I can get (what, you expect to me eat healthy and lose weight, ummm...nope) so no waving plus red bottle cages and with boa's on my shoes nets me about 47 watts right?

Expect see hundreds more why is nobody waving at me posts.

You can save another 10-15W by using ceramic bearings.

Now this suggests another experiment. Not the danger part, but I wonder how much the turning itself, during the weaving, would impact the aerodynamics. In addition to the extra distance you'd travel - after accounting for that, how much does weaving affect the drag coefficient? And the Reynolds Corollary, what about rocking the bike back and forth, as those all-out sprinters tend to do?

Interesting idea

Well, those are expensive. And they go on the inside so nobody can see them. I'd likely to have to tell them how impressive I am with my ceramic bearings...but...it is 10-15.

Hmmm....

And 16 watts if you shave your legs.

What I got out of this is basically don't weave when you wave.
