Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I haven't heard of that book, but it might be one I need. I have a hard time convincing the wife and the FiL that no, I really, really, really DON'T want you to just "help" me.

Really.

Don't start Mr. H on the whole Malaysia airline shoot-down thing. He 100% says its the fault of Malaysian Air, they routed the plane over a war zone where a cargo plane was just shot down days prior. Which confused me, because I though planes were told where to fly by some government agency like the FAA. No, actually what happens is you file your flight plan, the government agency approves it or maybe changes it somewhat. But still if they tell you to fly somewhere unsafe, the pilot 100% just says no and the pilot's decision takes precedence, the government agency then has to figure out how to make the pilot's plan work. So I asked him why Malaysia Air would purposely fly over dangerous airspace. He assumes its the shortest route, the idea is to save fuel- ie, its about $. Either that or they are very very inept.

So @coasting, having survived both the typhoon and the Taiwanese MUPs, save us all some worry and avoid Malaysia Air as well.

This is right on. I spent years in the "service" department, only to realize that wasn't what my wife wanted. She wanted the Rutgers' thoughtfulness.

Granted, seventeen years later, I'm still in the "service" department, but what I've come to understand is that's my issue and not hers.

Not trying to get in a debate, but Mr. Makel knows lots of plane stuff, he says that they were told to fly over a certain height, and they were flying over that height. Flight plans are public, (and very easy to look up), there were lots of flights over that area. Each plane has a signature of some kind, I got no idea on the details of that, and that the idiots using the missile launcher should have been able to easily see that it was a civilian plane.

mr h is smart. and no way will i fly malaysia air even though they are the cheapest from taiwan to london. a few years back i remember malaysia air was reprimanded for carrying insufficient fuel on the london flight. heathrow airport is so congested that it is normal to be held in a holding pattern for half an hour waiting your turn to land..well all airlines factored this in except them. makes me suspicious of the corporate culture.

the ukraine space was not declared off limits by ukraine and the advice from FAA but most airline rerouted just in case. i took note of those who didn't..dodgy corporate culture. i noticed eva air of taiwan and singapore airlines also kept to that route. i will avoid.

#Facepalm

And the FAA did tell American carriers not to use that space, but that's no excuse for someone to shoot it down.

Mr. Makel is right.

Is it literally "Mr. Makel" or are you also using it in the figurative sense?

no one is excusing the idiots who shot it down. stop misrepresenting me. airlines have a duty to avoid obvious risks and if others had, then one wonders why some didn't. just as i question why a plane was flying during typhoon shut down day.

It's comparative negligence, not contributory negligence. She said 100% to blame. That's dumb.
