I like the idea of a light car like the Elio. Less resources to build, less to operate and perhaps more fun to drive than a refrigerator/Prius. I suppose the motorcycle classification gets them out of all sorts of automotive safety requirements. I wish those could just be relaxed to some extent in the name of efficient fun little cars.

The benefit of the Elio is that it's enclosed so you can drive in the rain, cold, etc.

I like the Elio as well, which is why I knew about licensing. My wife actually likes it as well. But history shows that that things we like in common die painful deaths (TV shows most gruesomely), so the Elio won't make it to production, especially at $6800

I would never buy something expensive from a country with a shoddy record of quality control. That being said, I feel sorry for the guy, it sounds like he may have gambled his wheel budget on some bad odds.
After 14 years of working with them I look at them all with disdain.
