That's the cause of the crash, NOT random carbon asplosion causing the crash as some instigated here. I believe there were some "fog of war" after the crash, and some bikes got damaged.

I've worked in Public Relations before...the way Specialized (mis)handled this is a textbook example of how NOT to respond to an incident.

Are you serious?
This caused the crash (and busted leg). The bike he was riding at the time was damaged but not destroyed. Roche gave Contador his bike and waited on team car. Contador rode for who knows how long and stopped, which is why you see the McLaren Tarmac laying on the ground next to Conty when the docs are working on him. In the effort to get the team car up to Contador, the secondary bike busted on the rack when the Saxo and Belkin cars came together.
What the hell is so hard to believe about this?

Paraphrase an adage:
Never attribute to conspiracy that which can be adequately explained by incompetence (by the Spesh PR department).

So what will be the official story from Specialized now? While I like Specialized bikes, I see them only trying to deflect and cover up. That is who they are. Next version- Contador was mugged and the muggers ran over his bike right after.

This came by on the live feed just before the end of the stage:
Questioned by letour.fr, Tinkoff-Saxo's directeur sportif Philippe Mauduit who jumped in the second team car to let a free seat to Alberto Contador after his retirement explained: “Alberto badly crashed. His right knee is seriously injured. The crash has been violent. I have his shoe with me, it's completely destroyed. According to some rumors, his bike has been broken but that's not the case. A bike fell from our racks after we fixed Nicolas Roche's bike. It's obviously too early to establish a diagnostic for Alberto. Once he'll reach the finish, he'll undergo an x-ray examination. Before pulling out, he told us that he was in an awful pain and he couldn't go any further on his bike. It's a pity because everything had gone well since the beginning of the Tour. We had a plan and today's race was unfolding exactly as we wanted. In a fraction of a second, it all fell apart, so we're immensely sad. Tomorrow, it's a rest day. After tomorrow, a new battle will begin. We'll stay united and a new Tour de France will begin for us.”

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken, have they encircled the wagons?

The bike Contador was riding when he crashed wasn't broken. He traded bikes with Roche who continued the race (temporarily) on Contador's crashed Tarmac. It was one of his two spare bikes on the roof of the team car that got tangled up with the Belkin team car and got crushed. Doesn't seem so criminal when you have all of the facts.

So we should have assumed they were lying. A lot of people were I suppose.
Reports suggested that the problem was the frame on Contador's bike literally snapped in half.

What's interesting is that Roche said "As I helped Alberto up, I noticed his bike was broken..". And this is the broken bike that Tinkoff says crashed at 60kph:

Not sure if this was posted above and not that I really care (posting for skeptics) but here is the best account I've seen so far ....

I think Spesh panicked because someone on TV implied that the frame broke causing the crash (I don't remember the exact wording on NBCSN but I thought at the time upon hearing it: this is a big news if the frame actually snapped and causing the crash), and made some hasty and inaccurate or even erroneous comments trying to absolve themselves. From that point on, anything Spesh said were just red meat for the Spesh hating conspiracists.
