Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You're giving the idiots on the internet way too much credit. The rampant speculation by the trolls would have probably been even worse if Specialized said they weren't commenting until the facts came in. I think Specialized was put in a tough position when immediately following the Contador crash one of the NBC commentators said the crash was a result of the frame failing.

Maybe because he's trying to recover from a broken tibia and the realization that his tour is over and that's a bigger priority than satisfying a bunch of bike dorks' curiousity.

Wrong assumption. Contador is being held by Mike Synard's special forces in Guantanamo Bay. He's currently undergoing torture and brainwashing as to avoid negative publicity. When he will be released we don't have a clue, but watch out for an AC clone that will be used as a cover up.

Initial reports on the Tour’s race radio, in French, and by NBC Sports’ Steve Porino, that Contador’s bike was “in pieces,” appear to be correct. “His frame snapped in half. They threw it in a heap in the back of the car,” Porino said, noting that he had arrived shortly after the crash.

I think the expert quoted in this article has some great points:

So what really happened to Alberto Contador's Specialized Tarmac yesterday at the Tour de France? | road.cc

Good article. That certainly clarifies an awful lot. One of the comments on that post beings up a very good point and that's the team cars with a ton of bikes on the rack are wide. Racks and bikes can easily tangle between passing cars.

Duh! Folks who see a conspiracy everywhere are folks who identify with conspiracies. It's nice when experimental data supports common sense.

Social Psychology = a bunch of simple, common sense theories about how we behave in social situations are confirmed.

Okay, okay - it's not that simple. But through a few graduate courses (etc.), I rarely found myself surprised by study results (but I'm no Shankar Vedantam).
