Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can ride my bike just fine solo. The group dynamic is different and that is what I was getting at.

Regarding the first incident I was in a pack with two others passing a slower pack and a sharp curve came up on the MUP. As the last person in my pack I was into the turn the same time the slower pack started to enter the turn. I was just following the guy in front of me. Speed was fine if I had the whole width to work with but it was not there due to the other pack entering as I was.

The second incident was not my fault. I either crash into the little kid or try to avoid it. I avoided it but ended up riding in the ditch between the edge of the pavement and a chain link fence. I was able to hop onto the MUP without wiping out (which would have put me onto the MUP anyway and probably all the way across it). Its the folks that caught up to me as I slowed that could have crashed into me had I wiped out but since I was able to stay up right no one crashed at all, just a sudden slow down.

So like I said before, a group dynamic is much different than riding solo or even with 1-2 others. Its not something that can be taught, it needs to be learned. Sometimes things happen while learning. Sometimes even the best riders have incidents.

Why would someone be talking crap about the wife and kids of a stranger? Do people do this? How did your d-bag even know you had kids?

Something doesn't make sense here. What did you say to him that 1) gave him the information that you had a wife and kids, and 2) made him start talking crap about them?

Ah, you are on an MUP. Bad things happen when you try to group ride on MUPs.

Im not getting into the details. Yes, people obviously do it. What makes them do it? Because they are insecure, ignorant, unhappy _____heads.

It is about 3 miles of the MUP we use. Group is usually 14-15 total riders stretched over 3-4 packs. Time of day is usually not very busy but it is getting more so as days get longer. I'd rather go around, but there is a river so crossings are limited.

Sensitive. Just wondering what possibly could have led to this outburst against your wife and kids. Just not something I've seen before; a stranger just randomly insulting the wife and kids of another stranger.

I personally can't figure out why any cycling group would drop the OP.

I'm the nicest guy you'll ever meet. Seriously. I just don't generally put up with people running their mouth and talking junk about me. Yesterday afternoon caught me off guard so I didn't have much to say back. You guys today, not so much.

I did everything I could to be nice and humble yesterday. Walked up to strangers, introduced myself, told them I was new and had never ridden with a group. Asked them questions about what to expect, told them to let me know if I was doing something wrong, etc.

OP, go to the regional sub forums and ask about groups in your region. People should be able to help you find something fitting in your area.

Because I was too slow, but we've been over that. Reading is not your strong suit.

Ugg. Ya got me.

Still doesn't make sense. I guess the stranger took a flying guess about the kids? You probably have a ring... that would explain how this stranger knew about the wife. But the kids? Weird.

I'm not really all that curious. Just that you were the one who brought it up; seemed important.

Anyway, have fun riding. I think your expectations for this particular group might have been a little out of line with the reality you found yourself in. There are other groups that might fit your riding skill (and mindset) a little better.
