I agree about expectations, but I only had the info I was given. I like riding. I like riding fast. I hate that I got dropped because it just means I wasn't good enough yesterday. It won't be the case forever.

I think I'm starting to understand the culture.
Its okay for you guys (old BF members, older cyclists etc) to say anything you want to a new guy, but when the new guy doesn't just take it and gives it back, it's a problem. Guess it's a good thing I didn't talk back yesterday-- I coulda got shot or something!

You will find the worlds toughest guy's right here on BF, I mean hardcore types. Don't let it get to you man.

OP, go back to page one and read my post to you. I think it's post #3 . I knew this would happen and that's why I put that in my post. It sounds like the last sentence in my post is what you need to do. Not all groups are like that. The A group I ride with (when I choose to ride fast) is nothing like what most people describe here.

Dont worry about them getting to me. I'm new to cycling, but not forums by a long shot. I've got pretty thick skin and can hold my own. It helped the afternoon go by, so it wasn't all bad.

+1. high speeds when there are kids/families around and little maneuvering room don't mix. I'm sure we've all done it at one time or another when there weren't better options, but bad stuff can happen that way.

Excellent. Good for you; you know what you want. Now then, why are you spouting this in a thread about group riding? The activity is definitely not for everyone, but many enjoy it, especially once they are past the learning curve. There is an etiquette to learn though, to keep everyone safe and all; if you are too much of a rebel to engage this, then it's probably best if you stay away.
