Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Beginner Advice

Wanted so advice on a Road Bike. I have been looking at several but not sure what I'm really looking at.
I have looked at the:
GMC Denali
Takara Kabuto
Victory Vision Road Bike
Not wanting to buy used and not wanting to spend a lot of money just because I'm new to the cycling life. Any advice or recommendations would be great!

I'm 16
6 foot 2 and about 160 pounds
Not sure if that determines what bike to get or not
Not wanting spend over $250 for sure!

Thanks in advance, Cameron

As you probably know, that budget isn't going to allow for much. If you're out of shape and this is your first step at fitness these cheaper bikes may do the trick for a while. Understand that once you're in shape or ready to start any degree of serious riding, they're not gonna cut it. But as a truly entry level bike with the sole purpose of light fitness then they may pan out. If you find your cycling interest begins to increase, do yourself a favor and test ride a regular dedicated roadbike so that you can make a good decision when it's upgrade time! Have fun and good luck.

I think I will enjoy riding just skeptical of dumping tons of money into it.

Which out of the three bikes I mentioned would you guys recommend being the best for a beginner? Or what to look for when buying a beginner bike?
Thanks!

The reason I put that is because I do not know what to look for with a used bike. The nearest bike shop to me does not sale used bikes either. Where would you suggest looking or what brand of bike would you suggest looking for?

Thanks!

Probably craigslist or equivalent is your best bet. Do you have any friends local who are cyclists??

Awesome! I will check those out!
I am in Jackson, TN
I have talked to a few friends and local bike shop. Neither were very much help.

You are looking for what we would call an "entry level" road bike that is gently used and maybe 2-5 years old.

New would cost $750-1000, but used and in reasonable shape would go for $200-300. Make sure the size/fit is correct. At your height you are probably looking at 58-61cm size.

Just want to give your props for taking a smart financial approach to a new sport. It's a good idea not wanting immediately start out dumping money into a new sport when you're not sure you'll like it.

Thanks! I really like the design of the GMC Denali and they have a used one in my area for $100. I emailed a local bike shop to see if they have any used ones.
What is a good brand to look for in the used department?

Cannot thank you guys enough! Very anxious to get my first Road Bike!!

Only if you're comfortable in correcting everything that might be wrong with it. Brakes, derailleurs, headset, wheels, hubs, bottom bracket, everything. A used Denali is almost certain to be wrong, sometimes weirdly wrong.

Agree. See what I wrote, you want to be looking at 58-61cm frames. Maybe even 62cm.

Bikes: 2019 Supersix Evo, 2002 Trek 2000

Here are a couple of potential options:

Trek 1100 Road Bike --- a little old-school with the down-tube shifters, but it'd fit you and looks to be otherwise in good shape (and they say there are new-ish tires, so that'd be a win.)

Great Deal on a Very Nice Road Bike --- this one might be a little small. I'd ask them what size it is...
