The problem in Central Park is none of the rules are enforced. Pedestrians constantly jaywalk, ignore lights, walkers, joggers in the bike lanes, slow riders in the fast bike lane, riders cycling against the CCW traffic flow...Cyclists ignoring lights, when avoiding hazards coming over into the walking and driving lanes, etc.. There's been a focus on enforcing cycling rules by the NYPD but I think a class action suit is being filed against the city because the enforcement is selective...

I was riding in CP today and noticed this. Cops had blocked off a pretty large section after Tavern on the Green. Article doesn't mention what color the light was. I wonder who had the right of way because CP is notorious for people just doing whatever the want. Everyone thinks they have the right of way.
I've actually raced with the him, seems like a very nice guy.

Looks like they do have a required bike lane law. There are exceptions for safety, turns, access, etc.
The law actually says "etc." Nice. I'd probably take that "car lane" in NYC much of the time.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Holy cow, that is one of the most perfect pieces of sensationalist yellow journalism I have ever had the chance to read. I mean, the cold facts probably point to the cyclist being at fault, but wow, the phrasing, the diction, everything they can possibly stack against the cyclist. They spin better than a track champion.

Well that depends on how you look at. In that area, there's a running lane, a bike lane and 2 car lanes. Cyclist, horse drawn carriages and bikes that carry people in the back (don't know what they're referred to) use the the bike and car lanes. No cars use it because they're not allowed in that area of the park unless you're cop, ambulance or park vehicle.

There are bike lane laws in NYC. There's a video on YouTube about a guy poking fun at it since bike lanes are also abused by everyone. Cyclist go the wrong way, pedestrians use to stop in while waiting for the light to change, cars use it to double park, etc. Law says, cyclist must always be in the bike lane.

Best part of the article is the break/brake mistake.
“He couldn’t break because he was leaning down,” Longman said.

Unless it's changed since I've moved, if there's a bike lane, you're supposed to be in it unless it's obstructed. In the parks, lane designation varied depending upon the time/day.
