Football's really stupid. Millions to push pigskin down a field, as if that's somehow worthwhile. Stupid stupid and stupid again. Really an infinity of stupids would be insufficient in describing just how stupid it is. And now we find out the players become stupid by playing it which takes the infinity of stupids and raises it 1.

So I have had crap luck for riding time since the P2P with Mr. @rjones28. I had the weeks of chest pain, followed by the wife having surgery and me not wanting to leave her solo, followed by working 12 and 14 hr days. So this weekend was my first weekend of back to back rides in six or seven weeks.
Saturday was 55 miles on the SS. The group rode the flatter of our courses out to Skaneateles, so it was no trouble sticking to the pack. But the day was overcast, and we decided to come home the hilly route, which is mostly downhill. I was spun out toast, and lost the leaders early on, but then heroically pursued solo. I would lose grounds on the descents, hold even-ish on the flats, and slowly reel them in on the climbs. I would try to scoop up any stragglers that fell off the group, but no one wanted to jump on to the spirited chase. With about five miles left in the ride, I had finally lost total sight of the leaders, and figured there was no chance of closing the gap. And I was pooped. So I just cruised up to the final big climb before getting home. And lo and behold, I espied the lead guys in front of me, higher up on the 10% grade. And Lord, did I try to catch them. But I didn't. I pushed to hard on the lower part of the hill, and was gassed for the top of it. And they were long gone over the rollers that followed the hill by the time I crested, so it was a mopey tail drag home.
Sunday, I brought gears. We rode essentially the same course, but the opposite direction. The pace was civil, the hill climbs brisk, and it was painful. By the last 15 miles, I was more than toast. I had that same 10% grade to go over on the way back (course starts and finishes on the route), and I had the option to avoid it. But I didn't. But I did use my gears, for a nice 34x21 spin up over the top. Surprisingly, even tired, 34x21 is much easier to climb in than 47x16. Maybe I'll start a thread on that.
So at work today, my legs are sore. But they are a good sore. And I am a happy camper.

Thanks all. It is good to ride. Jesus rode a donkey because he didn't have a bike. I kid you not.

It's humorous that football is being destroyed by the weight and strength of the players. It is so dangerous now due to the size of the players that even the best protective equipment is ineffective. The game is destroying itself. Already rules to protect the players have made whole aspects of the game, like kickoffs, totally stupid. The kick originates so far up the field that most of the time it is a touchback. Ironic since it is supposed to be FOOTball. Every year more rules to prevent injuries also prevent the game from being played as we knew it. I'm all for player safety, but if that is what it takes, maybe it is time to hang up the cleats.

So I'm at the bike shop today. I pick up a 2013 Scott Scale 700 hardtail and it's by far the lightest hard tail I've ever picked up. That bike is TWO POUNDS HEAVIER than the 2015 Scott Scale 700SL bike that I have on order, which should be just sub 20 lbs with pedals, water bottle cages, power meter. Man that's light. That bike will be fast, nimble and roll way easier than a 26" wheel bike, can't wait to feel what it's like flicking that bad boy up on the singletrack in Goosepond park.
I'll be giving the PCad bike bunker an overhaul. No detail will be overlooked. All the bikes get cleaned, retaped, lubed.

Pro football players are paid less than either baseball or basketball players and have shorter careers. Considering the risks they take in their profession and how little time they have to turn their life's work into an income, I don't begrudge them a penny. In fact, I think they're underpaid.
If they really wanted to improve safety, they'd reduce dead balls and get rid of padding. That would make it much more like rugby or aussie rules. The lack of padding would reduce the use of helmets and pads as bludgeons, the reduction of dead balls would reduce the impact of collisions because the game would be more about blocking and tackling and less about collision intervals.

Exactly. Reduce the stoppages and conditioning starts to become more important than bulk and the weight differences start to narrow.

I like football. It's fascinating. It's far from stupid. I played it in 8th grade, wide receiver and free safety, but by 9th grade my 105 lb stature convinced me I'd never make it to 10th grade if I tried to play with the bigger HS boys.
Now cycling, that's pretty stupid.

Mr. Google says rugby players at elite levels have not weighed 165 lbs since 1972. Current avg weight of UK pros is 106 kg, and in 2012, 22 pro UK professional rugby players ended their careers due to injury.

Average time ball actually in play- 11 minutes
Average time of exercise per player per game- 6 minutes
Average length run by wide receiver per game 1.2 miles
Average length run by defense and of fence lineman per game- 0.2 miles
Like I said, really stupid.

You mean at great length and with many of the people around me actually, in fact, dead?

Dude... It was a literary reference because Marquez wrote "One Hundred Years of Solitude". I believe he also wrote that story in which a boy walks around the village and everyone is kind of dreamy and quiet and it turns out they're all dead or he's dead or some such. Maybe I should have alluded to Cholera?

They're blowing out the 2014 Addict SLs, I may get one of those too and sell the old Addict. That would build up to a sub 14 lb bike with PM and clinchers.
22 speed Sram Red, carbon 32mm 1400 gram clinchers. I would add either a Quark or Stages PM. I think I'm doing it, that would leave the only old bike in the line up the Cervelo P3 TT bike, that gets ridden very little and its so specialized, I'd never replace that anyway, that bike is fine. May as well upgrade the fleet while I have a pile of dough, won't get this chance again.
So it would be the Foil with 10 speed Di2, the Addict with 11 speed Sram, the Scott Scale with that 1 x 11 Sram xx setup, and the P3 for TT rides. It's a lotta dough on the one hand, but I'll net $4-5K for the stuff I'm selling (at least). So maybe the net comes out to $13K for two new bikes, new 404s, a couple of PMs, etc. That will fund the Pcad velo addiction for the better part of the next decade. In the Big Picture makes a lot of sense.
You just don't want to go into a lot of details about this outlay with Mrs. Pcad. Again, with her, I use the default line:
'it's cheaper than the Corvette babe'
And so it is. Don't think there isn't part of me that doesn't want to run down and buy one of those. I think I can keep that Pcad under control with enough bike schwag.

That's the standard question every internet idiot posts when they disagree with you in any way.
Hey, I don't care if you like football. I agree with you on some levels. On the other hand it's so entertaining to watch that if those idiots want to scramble their brains, I'll watch it every Sunday. I like it.

I would like a little discourse about my Dept. of Defense level proposed spending on bike crap however.
They are selling that Scott Addict SL for 40% below original MSRP, which is 7% below original dealer cost. Still pricey, but somewhat less preposterously overpriced. Even at that price this stuff is way too pricey.
You think football is stupid? The stupidity therein pales in comparison to the cost of high end bike crap and the idiocy of those who would pay retail for it like yours truly.
