Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Charging di2 without electrical outlet

Bike's in basement but there are no outlets. They make external smartphone chargers. Will these work with the di2? If not, anything else I can do rather than charging bike upstairs?

The wireless smartphone chargers work on the principle of magnetic induction, much like a transformer. This requires a coil of wire in the receiving device. Your Di2 doesn't have that. It also requires close proximity, which defeats the point of not running a cord.

Why not run an extension cord? Or wire for an outlet?

He's not talking about Qi or any other wireless charging standard - I think that he's talking about the battery packs with a USB charging port. If that's the case, I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as the voltage is within the standard.

Knowing what setup you have would help with an answer for this, as there are internal & external batteries, and knowing which model of charger you have has an impact as well.

With a SM-BCR1, just take the battery off, and take the battery to the charger

With a SM-BCR2 and you could use a laptop or any other device (like an external USB battery pack) which has a USB connection.

Get a generator hub for the front wheel and charge as you ride.

I was thinking the same thing! Would also be great for keeping phone/gps charged on long rides.

Doesn't the battery come out to bring upstairs for charging?

This would add to it's legitimacy, IMO, as the bike becomes operated solely by power provided by the rider.

To the OP. Get a circuit put into the basement for lights and outlets or tap off an existing circuit if the wiring accessible or if there's and existing light. If there is an existing light socket, you can also get and adapter that will screw in and provide outlets as pictured here: https://www.google.com/search?q=ligh...=1494&bih=1009

The power packs are a great option. But I would definitely go with a high quality version. Not some cheapy model. Should provide up to 2-3 charges max for the internal seat tube battery which is 500mah if I can remember correctly.

Something like this.

You don't have to charge it daily - something like a charge is good for 1000 miles. Unless you're doing that much a week, is this a big problem?

I'd just charge it upstairs for the 6 whole hours a year the bike needs to be plugged in. It's such a non-issue.

Leave it outside and let the next owner charge it.
