Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Would you say it is as good, equivalent, or better than Gramin sensors?

Great...now to confuse things more, the S5 price has been lowered by $500, and I happen to really, really like the crystal white paint.

But any way,

if SL>ALR>S, does that still apply when the top S (6S) prices higher than the SL5?

Well, from what understand, from what @oldnslow2 explained it, from entry level emonda to top it is as follows:

SLR>SL>ALR>S

If I am wrong, feel free to correct that. All model in each series use the same frame, but some have different forks and wheels.

Well @oldnslow2 is seems like DuoTrap is another feature, that I indeed would use. As I want to have speed, cadence data. And I would also add heart rate.

Be advised that the DuoTrap S has known issues with Edge 500 where the speed and/or cadence will temporarily drop out.

I don't know if it's the Edge 500, or the Duo Trap S, or simply the combo of the two. No issues with other Garmin models, as far as I know.

bb90/bb95 is Trek's bottom bracket "innovation". pretty similar to cannondale's bb30 where you have bearings mildly pressed directly into the frame. you can find it on a lot of trek road and mountain bikes including the higher end SLR frames. The problem some people have with the direct bearing press design is that it requires strict manufacturing tolerances. from what I understand bb86.5 is similar, except there is a cup around bearing, but it's still pressed in. You have to get the correct bb bearing set for the crankset you are using...I think the inner diameter of the non-drive side varies between shimano hollowtech and sram gxp. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

So, as long as you stick with with say Shimano in a Shimano equipped bike you will be fine?

No, each frame is different. And, the ALR4 uses an aluminum fork, versus carbon on the ALR5.

You might be able to dye the saddle black.

Thats a thought. I wonder what would be permanent type dye that wont rub off. I did try your Simple Green / water mix for cleaning the frame and it worked really well.

I do vintage VW restoration and have used spray on dyes a number of times. Going white to black is easy... black to white, not so.

I'd just wear black bibs just in case.

As I've done the past couple of years, I try to wait until the very last moment that specific Treks are available from the warehouse and they go on clearance. I was definitely on the fence with the SLR8 and SLR9 but I just picked up eTap for another bike and have DA Di2 on my BMC GF01, I figure it'd stay electric. The color is definitely growing on me. The only bummer is the matte finish, don't know why but it feels a lot coarser that my 2014/15 Domane 5.9.

It's also a complete and total dirt/grime magnet and shows everything. Not the end of the world, though!

Had an SL8 that I really enjoyed that this replaces. Debatable on (obvious) notable differences between the SL/SLR frame. I'm way to big a guy to get the true benefit of the lightweight frame for the purposes of going up climbs. That being said, it's a phenomenal ride. I didn't love the Domane SLR on a test ride before making a final decision and I know I'll love this ride forever. It'll just probably get a repaint in 5 years.

I like that color -- looks really nice. Not sure how I feel about the white seat post though (not that my opinion should make any difference to you whatsoever ).

Are you able to tell any differences in ride between the SL and SLR frames? I've got an SL; never ridden an SLR.

Heh, yeah the black post would look much less 'out of place.' It's all I had in my locker at the shop, I've got a black one on the way. Not a lot of demand at the shop for the 5 degree offset 175mm seat mast.

If I was a 165 lb dude, the difference might be noticeable. But at almost 250 lbs, absolutely no difference whatsoever over my SL8 in ride feel. It's a 15 pound bike as seen with double (full) bottles and my commuter/bomber wheels are probably 550 grams heavier than the Aeolus 3s that come with the bike, which I'll never use.

I really like the Bontrager direct mount brakes. I've got 25s on some pretty wide rims and I mostly definitely have clearance in the back for a 28 with room to spare. The front as well, just less room. I use run Conti 4-seasons (28c) on my bikes from September to April.

If I had to guess the 2016/17 Emonda SLs will come with direct mounts, just like they trickled them down to the Domane SL for 16/17. Personally, I still think the Emonda SL6 is the best "bang for your buck" bike that trek has in their carbon road lineup.

But as I'm a sucker for "shiny" I couldn't resist the siren call of Dura-Ace, Di2 and the SLR.

I will say that the Bontrager Paradigm XXX is a very acquired taste. I'm comfy on the R and RL series of the saddle but the XXX is a whole different beast.

I had a RL on my Madone and got a XXX on the SLR. I've since put the RL on my CX bike and never noticed any "discomfort" going from one to the other.

I've ridden a SL a few time and found it not as responsive as the SLR. The SL felt identical to my previous Madone 4 and the SLR just seems to accelerate quicker. The bottom bracket is stiffer and that puts the torque to the wheels.

To be more accurate, the ALR4 uses a carbon fork with aluminum steerer tube. The 5 and 6 use an all carbon fork.

Agreed, it's definitely not uncomfortable (re-read my post and couldn't find where I indicated it might be). It's just noticeably different than the R and RL. Whereas as the other Bontrager saddles are pretty similar as you move up the chain the padding (and amount of) are noticeable changed. But they've discontinued it, so I suspect we'll see them shift their focus to the Montrose and/or Serrano.

I just reread your above post 5 times and it sure "indicates" that your comfortable on the R and RL saddle but that you found the XXX saddle completely different. Sure sounds like your saying that you found the XXX uncomfortable. Maybe writing comprehension is the issue here and not reading comprehension.

Wow.... You are a passive aggressive type aren't you. You have found a way to take a nice picture thread and totally drag it down. Just because you can't feel the stiffness difference between two bikes does not mean that someone else can't.
