Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I Don't Need No Stinking Di2

So after about 23, 000 miles I finally had the shift housing underneath the handlebar tape replaced. I am never going to wait that long again. Mechanical DuraAce shifts pretty nice with fresh housing and cable. Yes, Di2 shifts better, but for the riding that I do, mechanical shifts well enough and the price difference can pay for a lot of a cable and housing, and a wheelset.

Each to his/her own but Di is here to stay. For looks and smooth riding it is only way to go.

What a useless thread. I'm sure you needed dura ace over ultegra or 105, imagine that 90% of the performance at less then 1/2 the price. You could be living in cable and housing heaven.

Is this thread anything other than a mileage brag vehicle? Is this the cycling equivalent to the vegan that unfailingly manufactures an opportunity to bring up their veganism?

Let's get on to something much more important.

Dear Ann Landers:

What is it with the numbered Colnagos? How many Colnagos are there posting altogether? How come we don't have @specialized58 and so on? Is it like you have a "38" revolver so I have to brag that I have a "39"?

I could say the same for classic steel with downtube shifters or barcons. Very little has really changed.

Di2 is just like anything. It's easy to criticize until you have it. But once you do, you don't want anything else.

You should look at threads about electronic shifting from 5 years ago. Lots of "why do I need it, index works just fine ..." and "having a battery doing the shifting to stupid ..."

Or think of all the beer you could buy!
Seriously, though, I actually found the post useful. So, at some point new cable housing is worthwhile and for most of us only a nominal maintenance expense. That's news to me and good to know. Maybe if I'd worked in a bike shop or read an authoritative book on bicycle maintenance I would have know it already, but what fun would that be when we have the internet (which is another one of those things that's 'here to stay')?

This seems like an excellent thread to ask. I understand the use of Di2 for people with mobility issues etc, pro racers, high end racers yada yada.. but for the regular cyclist what advantage does it give other than vanity? Is the pricepoint worth the ease of use for a non cat cyclist? I have to admit I've passed up the chances I've had to ride a bike with Di2 so I'm really curious here and not trying to stir the pot as it were.

Damn the Puritans. Their corrosive influence on our mores continues centuries after their unfortunate appearance in North America. The Brits are still laughing at the great cosmic joke they perpetrated on the American colonies by sending those sourpusses over here.

On a more enlightened note, just buy what you like. It doesn't have to be justified on any grounds other than you can afford it.

I agree with that part completely, but I'm always curious what the appeal of Di2 is to the common man and what advantages the common man sees in it. Anyone help a troglodyte understand?

Dear Perplexed in Houston,
Are you just jealous you don't have a Colnago number?
You have to have a 45 because they don't make a 46!

Why not Sora, Claris, or Tiagra?

The appeal is probably totally non-specific. Not, "I want it, because..." But rather, "I just want it. You got a problem with that?" What I mean is some folks just want the newest and most advanced. Think about smart phones. As if the IPhone 6 is any better than the 5s. Hardly. But there are lots of early adopters out there. The appeal is that it is new.

Di2????

Hell, I still drive a car with points and solid lifters.

Rode a Domane with Di2... it was very nice. But i'm happy with Sram and cables.

If it came with a hidden dynamo in the crank, maybe I'd consider it. I'd like, but I just don't want to be plugging my shifter into the wall all the time.

All the time? Like once or twice a year you mean? I'm not taking sides here, but come on, let's keep it real.

Didn't Pcad come on about a year ago saying that the charge light came on after less than a week?

I just checked review for the battery which claimed 600-1,300 miles per charge, so once ever month or two, just maybe 3 months. Likely more often, since I'd probably actually be shifting a lot if I had one. Too much charging for me, still.

I guess I could plug it in when I charge my lights now and again and it wouldn't be any extra trouble ... but I can ride easier without lights than without shifting when I let it go too long.

Great analogy.. especially since I'm an Android guy, puts it perfectly into perspective.

Yeah, not exactly a "labor of love", not for all of us anyway. I'm convinced, now I want one.
