Quill Stem too long - how to cut? can i do it myself?

I picked up a Nitto Technomic Stem but its too long for my frame by about 3 cm. I'm tempted to cut it. Its aluminum so it shouldn't be too bad. a bit much to do with a dremel. Maybe start it with a dremel and continue with a hack saw....finish edges with the dremel.

Is this a terrible idea?

i think it is doable, but people usually buy that stem because it is longer than most. be advised that after cutting the stem, the bolt may need attention too.

It's too tall? Swap it for a shorter stem. They're much more common, and you might even be able to find someone who wants their handlebars higher.

Yes, you can cut it down, but it's really tough to cut it at the correct angle for the wedge to work properly. Also, if you shorten the quill, you need to shorten (or find a shorter) wedge bolt.

yes, the Technomic is better as a resale /trade item as is,
many A shorter quill stem to be found..

you can also put a quill to threadless stem conversion plug in,
then put on a threadless stem.

the problem is that most shorter stems are too short as i'd like about 9cm rise. The next best option would be VO Quill Stem. https://store.velo-orange.com/index.p...uill-stem.html I'd rather cut the stem i have than buy a new one.

yes, maintaining the cut angle is clearly important.

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

Look for an NOS Profile Designs H2O stem in the appropriate stem length. It has a longer quill than most stems but not as extremely long as the Nitto.

Otherwise, have at it with the hacksaw and file and either thread the quill bolt further up or find a shorter bolt if necessary.

It's not hard at all to cut it to an angle that allows the wedge to work properly. It doesn't have to be perfect or even very close. I use a hacksaw and then smooth the cut a bit on a bench belt sander.

The bolt will protrude below the wedge, but it won't hurt anything.

I've cut down a couple of Technomic Deluxes and a couple more Dirtdrops. A shorter bolt is required only if you reduce the length of the quill drastically. The bolts that Nitto provides are threaded pretty far up.

Hack away. The angle isn't that important, close enough is good.Make sure it's smooth so it can slide and you have enough threads on the bolt to get tight.

This one is shortened, turned down to fit a 22 mm French fork, stripped and polished.

This Dirtdrop was shortened enough to need a shorter bolt. I'm no longer using it, but only because I decided that it's ugly. It's also sanded down to French size.

Call Chris and see if you can exchange it for a Nitto Dynamic.
