Strava has begun cutting off your data access
"Effective July 1st, Strava disabled access for 3rd party apps to connect to Strava data for the vast majority of 3rd party apps on the market. What are 3rd party apps? Simply put, they are ones developed by other companies to interact with Strava services. For example, the ability for Wahoo Fitness to upload directly to Strava, or for various Android apps to upload to Strava. Applications do this through what’s called an API (Application Programming Interface), or essentially a way to communicate with Strava as a site from a programming standpoint. Virtually every technology platform on earth has API’s (or similar methods) to connect to them, be it Strava, Garmin, Apple, or Microsoft. Everyone. The degree to which API’s are offered varies from company to company."

b) "your data" are still accessible via the website
c) Strava is for freds

Yeh that's what's so great about it!
Messing with the API access is one sure way to bring development to a dead stop. Which means that Strava has that as the deliberate objective. They either want to funnel access to their services through their own website or monetize mobile access (and other clever aps).
It could be a mistake. Strava has a lot of data which is their big asset but functionally Strava isn't all that technically difficult. On the other hand if Strava has enough network effect edge from "first mover" status then they'll come out looking pretty smart.

Well Strava can do whatever they want. People don't have to use it. It's THEIR data once you put it on their servers. I'll admit to being mildly annoyed though, because there are some other sites doing really interesting stuff with Strava's data.
I was surprised Strava was providing any API at all. What's in it for them?

STAVA clearly stated that they don't have the resources to have a full time API team so they decided to throttle back access until they could.
This is a 'victim of their own success' story; They've had too much growth too quickly and the can't manage it with their current resources.

You're in a position to tell me what I should find to be informative? Cool - how does that work? Regardless of the answers to those questions, am I free to then disagree with the whiny author's assessment or are you going to dictate how that should strike me, as well?
