Brake options for nondrilled fork?

This is, among other things, a public call to treechunk to remind me of a option he mentioned last week: namely, a cantilever system that clamps onto fork blades for track forks that aren't drilled.

I know there's always the option of a new fork.

Also, I'm aware of a clamp-on system that Keirin riders use to make their bikes street legal. There was a link to an eBay auction way back, but I haven't been able to find a source since. Anyone know of anything?

Okay, answering my own question, I think treechunk might have been telling me about these:

https://www.pacecycles.com/product.a...=3&subcat=439#

They look like they're really round, though, and my fork blades are more ovular, so I'm not sure how they're supposed to work.

most steel track fork blades are round, what kind of frame do you have?

another option is a drum brake, i think shimano makes one.

(the clamp-on keirin thing seems to have sort of gone away, at least for front brakes. i've seen rear clamp-ons here and there, but they seem sort of pointless).

Ah, okay. I was looking at the fork on my conversion, which is of course drilled for a brake. But I've got my eye on something...

Cantilevers would look pretty goofy, I know. But after Saturday I'm even more sure of my desire to run a front brake.

Would running clamp on brakes eff up the paint on your fork? Go with a new fork...or have a bike maker build you a replica drilled.

That's why I keep all the old inner tubes.

I have heard horror stories about the keirin clamp ons... apparently there is a chance of it coming unclamped and falling into your spokes and throwing you over the bars, but I can't recall where I heard it, so don't hold me to it.

I'm definitely improving...but: winter? Chicago? Dark at 4:30? Often drunk? It's not for me...at least not for any great distances or speed.

If it's worthy then you should only ride it on nice, dry days and wait until spring to take it out often. You have the raleigh, man! Pretend you're some rich dude who drives a Ford Taurus during the week and a Dodge Viper on the weekends....except you're not balding.

Fair enough...yeah, that Raleigh's becoming more of a tourer all the time.

Screw the brakeless mentality. If you want a brake, do it. Ceya! has posted before that the (true) Keirin racrs never train on the road w/o a brake. Either they use the clamp system or they drill the fork.

I run a front brake but have only used it a handful (pun intended) of times. Sometimes its hard to account for the stupidity of cagers, myself included.

It is your bike, with your butt on the saddle, don't let the non-owner/non-riders of your bike dictate your comfort level.

HYPOTHETICALLY, could an LBS drill the fork?

Yes, if there is enough meat on the crown and the distance from center (driled hole) is enough for the caliper to mount and contact the braking surface. Some track forks have millimeter-ish clearance between the crown and the tire, these are a case-by-case basis as to drilling or not. Your best bet is to get out the tape measure and see how the brake will match up prior to drilling.

Bikes: Too Many

They should be able to but take it to a good shop. Honestly, I would get a cheap fork for the winter. Maybe the Bikeworks Fork for $60. The increase in rake might be better for winter riding as well.

Bikes: more bikes than toes and fingers

As long as your riding with no brake, you might as well ride at night with no lights wearing all black

Every time a fork is drilled, the baby Jesus cries.

Also, drilling a fork reduces its resale by about 30%. And will give you cancer.

A fork crashed into the side of a BMW is worth even less. Just sayin...

I dunno... I ride fast in Midtown traffic, and as good as my bike/gap control is, there's always someone doing something stupid that it's handy to have a brake around. The vee brake adapter is actually pretty clever, and imagine running something fresh like the Paul Motolites (or am I just whacked
