Hi konaron (and others with a wealth of knowledge). I'm in CC and contacted him yesterday about seeing this tomorrow. It might be too big. I'd have to bring it to a shop for any alterations or repairs. I want the type of handlebars he has (non drop - I'm not looking to race) . any idea of what I should offer? I don't know much about bikes (yet) . My other bikes are 1980's hybrids. Other than a tune up can you tell if there major work to be done? Also, do you know the widest tire I could put on it? Thanks

I'd guess it would take 28s...but it's a guess. MAYBE you could sneak a 32, but I doubt it. I haven't had this model of lotus. I think I see a dent in the photo...that hurts value; otherwise I'd have said its a screaming deal. If it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit...don't buy it.

Yeah, the tires on there are the max. The dent kills it for me. I'd offer $200 if it fits. Honestly, that isn't a bike I'd ride. At the touring/upright price point, $200 is about right, though. $300 is too much. There are lots of equivalent bikes out there, so walk away if something is fishy.
I've seen people get excited over lesser frames on this forum.

I have no issue with that, but there are a lot of relatively high end Japanese production frames out there from the late 70s/early 80s. Some of those have pretty good tire clearance. Some have dents. Many do not.
I look at that as a parts bin special: 600 Arabesque crankset, brakes, and headset; Mismatched wheels and hubs, Suntour thumb shifters, Dia Compe(ish) brake levers, mismatched Suntour derailleurs, aftermarket seat post. The Brooks saddle is saggy. It looks like an SR stem. At least the PO put on alloy bars instead of steel.
It probably runs fine, but I wouldn't pay the asking price. I wouldn't pay the extra $100 for that Brooks, either. That's all.
If you're totally keen on Lotuses, and that's your bag, that's different. A Legend in that size and vintage might not be that common.

Here are the technical specs for those of you who are aficionados of old steel bikes. I bought the bike at the Missing Link Bicycle Cooperative in June 1979 and am the only person who ever rode it, and I'm generally pretty easy on nice mechanical equipment. It is in nearly pristine condition and all components are original factory issue. I have ridden it only rarely since about 1985 (now ride a mountain bike). Here's the list of factory equipment on the bike:

Minus the dent...the legends were pretty high zoot frames, and it has some pretty cool parts. The "weird" build may hurt value, but it's not an undesirable concept. I think (not counting for the debt) that I may like this one a bit more than you.
